Styling Bathroom Shelves from the Thrift Store
Styling Bathroom Shelves from the Thrift Store
I made over my basement powder room over a year ago and installed these reclaimed wood shelves complete with a smorgasbord of thrift store finds.
I loved my wooden shelves so much I just had to do the same with the shelf in my water closet. You know, the separate little toilet room off the main bath. I actually call it the toidy room, but that’s just me.
I fell in love with the existing shelf above the toilet back in the 80’s. It was brass at the time and when brass went out of style, I painted it white. It made the move from one house to the next. It was cute at the time.
Even painted white,I’ve fallen out of love with it again. Now I want something a little more substantial. What this world needs more of…wooden shelves!
Back to my wood pile. These 8 inch wide, old wooden planks will work perfectly. They just needed to be sanded then treated with 2 coats of clear wax.
If you want a darker finish on the wood, I would suggest you refer back to my mantel, antique wax and a few dabs of black paint make the perfect dark color. Imagine a dark brown/black railroad tie.
The refinished wood with added shelf brackets are now installed.
I found the brackets at an Amazon return store for only $4 The wood, of course, was free.
On top of the toilet sits this elaborately carved chest. I found him at a cute little shop in Bethany Beach, Delaware about 15 years ago.
So now comes my thrift store styling. I kept the 2 towels that were on the old brass/white shelf. I love colored glass bottles. These are not old and I find them fairly frequently at thrift stores. If you’d like to buy them new, think Home Goods, Marshalls or Hobby Lobby. Same goes for the ceramic bird.
The white pitcher has a big chip out of the spout. It doesn’t matter when it’s on the top shelf.
Change out your display until you find the one that works for you.
One bird becomes 2. The larger glass vase has been switched out for a faux greenery plant and I added the bright blue glass vase. Again, all thrift store finds.
Got rid of the towels replacing them with jars for q-tips and cotton balls.
The African carved tripod bowl holder and bowl were thrift store finds but you can find similar stands on Ebay.
Play around with your display. Use varying heights of displayed objects and have fun.
Until next time, stay inspired.
Joan,
What is an Amazon return store? Never heard of such a thing. Is it online?
The shelves look great, that little caraved chest is good enough to fight over!
I hope you didn’t throw away the metal shelf you took out, that was kind of neat.
Thanks for sharing, appreciate it.
