Super Easy Wood Slice Wall Shelf

Super Easy Wood Slice Wall Shelf

This will probably be my shortest DIY ever, a super easy wood slice wall shelf.  I don’t think you really need a how-to, just the idea to keep in the back of your mind, so when a slice of wood becomes available you’ll think, I know what I can make from that.

My wood slice comes courtesy of my middle son, Kevin, who was gifted a chainsaw by his wife for his birthday last year.  Cutting up a bunch of fallen logs in his backyard,  he asked if I needed any.  Since I had just finished a stump side table, wood slices weren’t top of mind for my next project but I might have a use for a couple of 2 or 3 inch slices.  The slices he gave me are just over 2 inches thick and about 15 inches wide.

I know I’m not the first to create a wall shelf from a slice of wood but you may not have realized just how easy they are to create yourself.  The alternative, buying them online, can get quite expensive.  These are from Anthropologie and range from $88 for a 12″ shelf  to $128 for a 24″ shelf.

Saw your wood slice in half.  I used the crack where the wood was naturally splitting as my starting point.

You’ll need to sand some, how much is up to you.  Do you want a super sleek finish or a little rough and natural?  Mine are a little on the rougher side.  This wood slice side table I created back in 2017 is more on the sleek side.

Finish with at least 2 coats of polyurethane.

There are so many shelf brackets to choose from.  These are 4 inch brackets in matte black available from Amazon.  They are currently $10 for the set of 4.

If you prefer your brackets to disappear, this set is another option.

Level your shelves and screw into  wall studs or use drywall anchors.

All ready for collectibles or your favorite decor.   These wood slice shelves are in a kids room at a farmhouse.  They are just calling out for stuffed animals.

Until next time, stay inspired.
