Easy DIY Vintage Style Hand Lettered Sign

Easy DIY Vintage Style Hand Lettered Sign

Today I have an easy project for the DIYer in your life, a hand painted sign on a piece of aged vintage wood.  The hardest part of this project will be finding that perfect piece of wood to serve as the backdrop for your sign.  The amount of letters on your sign will determine how long your board needs to be.

Once you’ve found your perfect piece of wood, you’re ready to begin.

On a computer, find a font you like and print out the letters from your sign in a large enough font so that it covers most of your board but still leaves a one to two inch border above and below your lettering. For my sign I found  I could print out 4 letters on a standard 8.5×11 piece of copy paper.

Cut out your letters and tape them back together in the appropriate order.

Coat the back of the letters with a layer of pencil or charcoal.  I’m using charcoal.

Center and tape in place on your board and trace around each letter with a pen.

You should be left with the outline of your letters.

Fill in the lettering with a color of your choice.

To make the sign appear that it’s been out in the weather for years, once the paint is dry, go over the lettering with fine sand paper.  If you like a more aged look, sand it again.

Display and enjoy.

Before I leave you, I have 2 more hand lettered signs from the past, these are both with cut out lettering.

This copycat sign  was inspired from an episode of Fixer Upper made with more vintage wood and  aged cut out lettering

Or this Enchanted Forest sign, created from wood scavenged from the original Enchanted Forest park.

Now go out and find that aged piece of wood and you’ve already done the hardest part.  As always, stay inspired.
