Thrift Store Upcycle, Belt Candle Holder

Thrift Store Upcycle, Belt Candle Holder

Welcome back friends.  Last weekend you would have found me with my 2 sisters, happily shopping the Rt 11 Yard Crawl in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.  It’s 43 miles of yard sale goodness.

In 2 days of shopping I only bought a few things  for future projects.  It is getting tougher and tougher to find unique items that call out to me to upcycle.  It also doesn’t help that I am still sitting on a couple of doors, windows, shutters and a pile of scrap wood and they are all waiting their turn for the spotlight.

The reason I’m mentioning this is that one person was selling a bunch of old belts for $1 a piece. My older sister asks what can you do with old belts.  Well, I’ve made a few handles a while back and most recently I’ve made a belted mirror and a pair of belt candle holders.

She remembered the belted mirror but couldn’t remember the candle holders.  Well I’ll just pull them up on my phone.

I know I made them…and it wasn’t that long ago…maybe I’ve just been out in the sun too long and can’t find them.  I’ll look later.

Well it turns out, I did make belt candle holders, I took all the pictures, I just never posted the project.

I think you’ll like them, they go down in the category of easy projects and I love a good thrift store upcycle.

From the thrift store, I purchased 2 belts and 2 nice sized glass containers.  The glass containers were about $1 a piece and each had a nice lip which could hold a belt easily.

The belts were $3 each, priced as if someone is going to wear them and not just cut them into little pieces.  And that is why finding belts for $1 each at a yard sale is a good find.

With the buckle part of the belt determine how much belt you’ll need to encircle the top of your jar.  Leave a few extra inches to buckle and for  overlap.

The remainder of the belt strap will be used for a handle.  Cut off the pointy part.

Use a generous dollop of E6000 adhesive or some other strong clear glue to adhere the belt strap to your jar.

Clamp in place and let dry.

Once your belt handle has dried, you’re ready for the buckle part you cut off in step one.

Mark where the  buckle will hit and use a hammer and nail to make one more notch in your belt.

Use more of the E6000 glue to adhere the rest of the belt to the rim of the glass jar.

Buckle in place and trim off any excess strap.

I cut mine into a point similar to the original belt.

The belt almost looks like Santa’s belt.  Perfect for Christmas.

Use these belt candle holders indoors or out.  On a side table or hung in a tree or garden hook.  Wouldn’t these be beautiful lining a path at a wedding?

So if you see leather belts for $1, buy them! Or send them to me.  😀

Look for those thrift store upcycles and as always, stay inspired.

I get so many great ideas from watching what you come up with. I have been saving some old leather belts and need to do something with them…this may be it. I have made a handle or two and love that look. I agree with Heather’s statement also. Junk genius fits.
