DIY Scrap Wood Napkin Holder

Scrap Wood Napkin Holder

I was busy working on another project to bring to you this week, a nice rusty curbside find, but an afternoon rain storm put a halt to my spray painting plans.  So with that in mind I bring you this scrap wood napkin holder designed and built by my youngest son Nathan.

He created this fine napkin holder a couple of years ago, right after I had completed my own fine napkin holder.  I didn’t bother taking pictures along the way because, frankly, it’s a napkin holder.  How many napkin holders do you need?  How different could it be from mine?

I would like to take this time to say I was wrong.  His turned out fantastic and it is totally different from mine.  Do I like his better? Maybe, you be the judge.

Nathan likes clean precise lines, I like pallet wood…enough said.

The wood is all scrap 1 inch pine.  The bottom piece is 6 1/2″ x 8″.  The  side pieces measure 5″ x 6 1/2″ before rounding off the top edge.

Nathan chose to have the wood interlocking like an enlarged dovetailed joint.  The napkin holder doesn’t really need it for strength like a drawer would, this is more for looks.  If you choose not to go the extra step of the interlocking joints make your bottom piece a 6 1/2 x 6 1/2″ square.

He used a drill and a tabletop scroll saw to create the elongated holes in the sides. /The same scroll saw carved out the dovetail joints and rounded the top edge.

All edges were sanded well before completing with a dark walnut stain and a polyurethane finish.

The metal piece that holds down the napkins was a lucky find in my pile of junk.  The original plan was to use a dowel with  wooden balls glued to both ends.

A view from the bottom of the napkin holder.

From this view you can see where he used nails to secure the box.  He also used wood glue in the joints.

My own napkin holder is on the right, This one is from scrap  pallet wood.  Take your pick, both are fairly easy beginner woodworking projects.

Until next time, stay inspired.
