DIY Yard Yahtzee

DIY Yard Yahtzee

If you’re tired of Corn Hole, you’re terrible at Ladder Ball (maybe that’s just me),  and you don’t have room for horseshoes, I have a fun yard game for you.  We’re taking Yahtzee and supersizing it!

You’ll need  a 4×4, no more than 20 inches, and a picture frame.  Well maybe a few more odds and ends, but those are the main supplies.

Cut your 4×4 into 5 equal cubes.

Use a regular die as your model to make sure your dice are anatomically correct.  Six is always on the opposite side of 1, 5 is the opposite of 2, and 4 is on the opposite side of 3.  With a marker, mark all your spots.

Use a 1/2″ drillbit with a roundish end to drill out all your dice pips (spots).

Paint the insides of your spots black…

…and the background white.

Once the paint is dry, sand all the edges for that well worn, I’ve been playing a lot of Yahtzee, look.

If you don’t care for the well worn look, sand your edges before painting.

The dice are completed, and now onto the second part of the game, the scorecard.

If you go online you’ll fine plenty of places where you can download a Yahtzee scorecard like here and here.

To fill my 11×14 frame, I enlarged the scorecard and printed it out on two sheets of paper.

Insert your scorecard into the frame.   The glass in the frame works perfect with a dry erase marker to record your score. The scorecard is pretty self explanatory but if you’ve never played before, you can find the rules here.

You can also use a Sharpie to mark your scorecard, though it is a little harder to erase.  I did find that the Sharpie came off with glass cleaner or ammonia or if it had really dried hard, a razor blade,

Find a large bucket to shake up the dice and you are ready to start your game.

When not playing, the giant dice are great for shelf decor.

Get out and enjoy this beautiful fall weather.  Stay inspired.
