My sister and I spent the weekend traveling up and down Rt 11 in Virginia at the annual Yard Crawl. While the husbands go golfing we go treasure hunting.
The Yard Crawl is only about 40 miles, but still took us 2 days . I have no idea how people attack the longer Rt 127 Yard sale, which goes for 690 miles from Michigan to Alabama but I would love to try one day.
A lot of the Yard Crawl we can do from our car. If we see a bunch of household items, clothes, baby stuff, we just drive on by. As you can tell from the picture above, old wood and rust gets us out of the car. This was my haul from this year, I’m counting 14 projects which includes the logs hubby chopped up for me.
You can find my 2014 finds here and 2016 here.
This is our mascot, flea market Frieda. She was found on the ground at our first Yard Crawl and has accompanied us ever since.
Along with all the usual treasures, there is always a good assortment of the unusual. This guy was only $1, but he didn’t go home with us.
I really don’t even know what this thing is. I can figure out some of the parts…but all together?…I have no idea.
Bought this beautiful cast iron pan for my youngest son. Personally I like the more modern non-stick pans but he loves the cast iron. After seeing them all day for 50 and 60 dollars (all nice and seasoned) . I couldn’t pass this one up for $5. Rust? What rust?
I’m always on the lookout for a unique upcycle to inspire you. This one fit the bill, it’s a pair of wooden crutches repurposed into a set of shelves.
Another upcycle, an old ammo box now holds seven wine bottles.
Absolutely loved this one…an old tv cabinet converted into another wine rack and bar. It looks like they took the wood out of the doors from the original cabinet and replaced them with glass.
And now for my finds this year and my future upcycles…an old surveyors tripod (with a canvas case).
A pair of old oak desk drawers.
A pair of previously green, pendant lights. At only $10 a piece, had to have them.
I’ve been looking for another one of these old jack stands ever since I finished my horse weather vane. If you go back and read that post you’ll know exactly what this one is going to turn into.
Any idea what these things were used for? Neither did I so I had to ask. Apparently they are a pair of old silo doors, at least that’s what I was told. Once I found that out I had to have them.
Not much left of this old bench but a nice pair of legs.
I see a table in this old wooden round’s future. It has an awesome intact band of metal surrounding the wood.
I’m thinking this is an old milk strainer. Not being a farm girl, I could totally be wrong. Possible pendant light?
Talked my sister into buying this old metal cabinet on wheels. I did promise to do the makeover. He may be a little rusty right now but I see great things in his future.
Not sure of the future of this old dolly but I couldn’t resist the vintage wheels.
This was a find by my youngest son who was on the other end of the flea market with his girlfriend. They couldn’t fit in our car 🙂 so they were on their own.
The seller was asking $10 for the three but he got them down to $7.50…that’s my boy!!!
These may look just like plain old wooden sticks but they are actually tobacco sticks, used in the harvest of tobacco.
I wasn’t in the market for a twin bed but this old oak bed was left on the side of the road with a great big FREE sign after the seller closed up shop.
I started off this post with a picture of my treasures, and these are all my sister’s finds after 2 days of yard sale fun.
So now you’ve seen my lineup of fall projects but which should I do first? So many decisions. 🙂
Stay inspired.
Gosh, you got so lucky! That jack stand is awesome, makes me almost miss a little rust! Can’t wait for you to do the tri-pod and I love those pendant lights…sheesh
Most all milk equipment is stainless steel, your piece looks like copper or brass…if it’s copper, maybe a still? Very cool.
I so want to go to the 127 yard sale but I am trying to find a dang truck to buy that doesn’t cost a zillion dollars!! How did you guys get ALL that stuff home???
Well done, must have been some good luck from Frieda!
Looking forward to seeing all the creative ways you use these finds!
I vote for tackling the “old metal cabinet on wheels” first! The minute I saw it I had ideas flooding through MY head. Can’t wait to see what it is reborn as. (You found some really great stuff on the yard crawl. The “crutches” shelves were so cool.) Although I know I let ideas roll around and ferment in my head before I settle on a final redo so I would understand if you want to think about the “cabinet” for a while. In any case, I really enjoy seeing what you’ve been working on and look forward to your posts. (BTW, I’m the gal who gave you all the info on the Maryland flag a while back.) Have a great day!
I remember all that info and I totally want to do the old metal cabinet but that’s the only thing that didn’t fit into my car. I’ll have to wait a couple weeks until I can get over my sister’s house to pry it out of her hands. Thanks Lonnett
