Vintage Rolling Pin Hooks

DIY Rolling Pin Hooks

I have another easy DIY for you today, wall hooks made from old rolling pins and vintage moulding.

You may have to start scouring the thrift stores, or maybe even your mom’s cupboards.  I do happen to have a rolling pin that’s hardly ever used, but I let that one be for now and found these two on my last thrift store run.  They were both marked at $3, but one was half price, which always makes me smile.

The vintage moulding was found at an architectural salvage yard last year.  Whenever I hit the salvage yard, no matter what else I’m shopping for, I’ll take a look at their trim scraps.  I’d rather have a few extra pieces of moulding on hand than hitting the lumber yard where the simplest of trim runs $1 per foot on up.

First up, the rolling pins.  Before you cut, see if your handles unscrew. Some rolling pins have a metal rod going the length of the pin that you don’t want to cut through.

Use a miter saw to cut a nice sized hook.  My saw was set at a 30 degree angle and my hooks are fairly short.  Adjust the length of your hooks depending on what you’ll want to have hanging on them.  If you’d like to use them as hat hooks, you may want to make the pins a little longer and space them further apart.

Cut your moulding or backing board.  This piece was 21″ for the four rolling pin pieces.  Add about 4″ more for each additional piece.

One of my rolling pins was solid wood inside, the other had a dowel.  If your rolling pin has the dowel, you may want to use wood glue so the handle doesn’t spin.

The old moulding was a little flaky, the edges were rough and the paint was a little caked on the edges.  Nothing a little sanding couldn’t take care of.

Vintage wax transforms the glossy white paint to an old piece of wood, highlighting those freshly sanded edges.

Find the center of your moulding and predrill where each rolling pin will hit.

Do the same with the center of the rolling pin.

Attach the pins with wood screws.

Once I had everything together, I changed my mind on the background color and went blue.  Sanded the edges and once again finished off with a coat of vintage wax.

I added a second screw to prevent the pins from spinning.

Now I’m going blue, just choose your favorite color.  You can always change your mind  😉
