Green Chalk Paint Entry Table

I recently bought this entry table for my son and daughter in law who just moved into a new home in mid December.  This table as well as the desk from earlier in the week were from an online auction.  Like the desk, this piece was also about $30.  Actually, I won one piece for $35 and one piece for $25, and since I don’t remember which one was which, Ill just say they were both $30.

This is the after shot after a little makeover and TLC.

The before shot doesn’t look quite as pretty but it honestly looks much worse than it really is.  Since I bought this entry table at the same time as the desk , the only way they were both going to fit in the car was if the table was dismantled.  That’s why  I now find myself with this pile of parts in my kitchen.

This was the top of the table, a little scratched up, but since I paint just about everything black, my vote would be to leave it as is and do a lot of touch ups.

Before I attacked this thing and painted it a color I liked, I did a consult with the house moving couple and after the chalk paint consult and looking at about 50 paint colors each chose green. And it wasn’t just one trying to make the other happy, it was independent choices without knowing what the other chose.  Hmmph, so much for black.

They really never gave me instructions for the top so I did go off on my own just a bit deciding to leave the top a natural wood color.  So easy to paint over if they don’t like it.

Sanded off the old finish with the electric sander.

Sanding with the sander leaves tiny little swirly marks.  If you’re going to stain, you’ll have to sand all those little swirls away.  Use fine sandpaper and a sanding block and sand with the grain until smooth and swirl free.

This was after one coat of dark walnut.  It really brings out the grain but I was looking for a darker wood.

While the stain dried, I finally screwed the table back together so you can finally see what I started with.

While the table was in pieces I painted the tops of the legs with this nice olive green paint.  If you like the olive color it’s official name is Moss Green by ArtMinds. That color looked totally different on the jar than it did on the table.  Definitely not the color I was instructed to paint.

Back to the store where I found this emerald green.  Much closer.  If you like this color it’s Fern by Waverly.

The stain is finally dry and I’m back to getting a darker finish on the top.  This time I’m applying a coat of Waverly Antique Wax over top of the stain.  If you followed the desk transformation, it’s the same wax that covered up all the scratches.  Just paint the wax on and rub it off.  A second coat of clear or antique wax will give you a more durable finish and if you buff it with fine steel wool,  a little luster.

I’m using the same antique wax over the green paint.  Right here the wax is just on the drawers so you can see the contrast and decide whether you like the green before or after waxing.

With chalk paint, even if you decide not to go with the antique wax you’ll still need to seal it with a clear wax to smooth out the finish and get rid of that chalky feel.

The entire piece now has the antique wax.  I always like the way the wax settles into the crevices giving them a little added emphasis.

I still have a little of the green paint leftover, maybe you’ll be seeing more of this color in the future.  I’m kinda liking it!

Until next time, stay inspired.

Interesting color, I am glad you used the dark wax and kept the top natural. It sure seems to bring out the more graceful/classic looks of a piece.
I also follow a blog from a DIY furniture person from Argentina, she said Pantone is calling the 2019 color as “coral”. The color looked pretty good on the piece she did, very different. Some other paint company issued their predictions for 2019, no coral, they were aiming at whites and a rich teal blueish color. Paint companies must do that every year?? Could it be different for different countries?

I don’t particularly like following the color of the season because that just means you’ll be repainting next season. Just go with what you love.

This table is fabulous! I love the natural wood combined with the awesome green paint color. I would redecorate my entire living room to make that piece fit into my color scheme 🙂

Great tutorial…..and nice to see some paint with a little life to it. I’m fond of the wood tops myself—anchors a piece in the room if it can relate to other wood toned finishes. Great Job!

Great makeover! I love the stained top with the green painted body. The dark wax is just the icing on the cake.

  • I quite like the contrast of the stained wood with that pretty green, which I love even more after being waxed. Very pretty entry table makeover, Joan! You son and daughter-in-law are so lucky to have such a talented Mom.

Love the green piece! What color is on the wall behind it?

Sorry for the late comment, I wasn’t near my paint when I read your comment and then it totally slipped my mind. In a short answer, it’s taupe. But the official color is Garden Wall by Behr. Not sure they would still have the color. According to the gallon of paint we lasted painted the walls in 2004.

Is it only the fern green paint over the dark wood? No other base color? I am loving this

I’ve been looking for furniture finished with this Waverly fern green. I found the exact issue that it did not look like the color on the bottle. I love what you have done! Now I have a good idea how my piece will turn out. I feel like I need to put more layers of the dark wax on mine. I have never waxed anything before. I am looking forward to learning more about it. Thank you for the motivation!
