Upcycled Barrel Stave Candle Holder
Barrel Stave Candle Holder
Last week I shared with you my first barrel stave project, a 4 bottle wine rack. From the 5 barrel staves I picked up, this is stave #3.
Yup, I only need one barrel slat for this project and a metal candle holder from the thrift store. I thought I would also need a couple pieces of pallet wood but I ended up not needing them.
This project is really similar to the wine rack. Both needed barrel staves, both needed a decorative metal piece from the thrift store and for both I needed to use a grinder to cut the pieces I needed off of the decorative metal piece.
This time, I just needed the candle holders with their post intact. I’m saving the swirly piece, I never know when inspiration will strike so it will join my junk pile for now.
Don’t have a grinder, you could also use a hacksaw or a Dremel.
Sand off as much of the dirt and grime from the barrel stave as you like. I’m keeping the rust stripes as a reminder of it’s wine barrel past.
To restore some of the richness of the oak barrel stave, I’m giving it a coat of American Walnut wood stain.
Spray paint the candle holders black.
Draw a center line and mark where you want your candles placed.
Find a drill bit the same width as the post of your candle holders and drill holes taking care not to go all the way through the stave.
Final step, use Gorilla Clear Glue or other adhesive to attach the candle holders. Make sure they’re level before leaving to dry. They might have to be propped up.
Two more staves to go. Got any ideas?
