Scrap Wood Easter Egg

I have a fun spring time or Easter project for you and if you have enough scrap wood sitting around you just may be able to make it for FREE. This colorful Easter egg is made with pieces of moulding that are really too short to be used for anything else.

To start out you’re going to need an egg shape. If you’re really good at freehand, you won’t need a pattern. But if you’re like me, my circle and eggs are always just a little off.  What you don’t want is an egg that’s too squatty, too round or lumpy, it has to be egg shaped.

Print out  your egg pattern any size you like and tape back together if necessary.  I decided to go just a little bit bigger than the one I printed out, that’s why I have the white edge.

Transfer your pattern onto 1/2 inch plywood.

Cut out with a jigsaw, scroll saw or band saw and paint white.

Remember when I tore apart my scrap wood pile looking for a piece of moulding?  That’s when I  found out that I have a bunch of random trim pieces that really wouldn’t be good for any full size project, but they might be good for an Easter egg.

Cut all those random scrap wood moulding pieces about an inch wider than your Easter egg.  They don’t have to be exact yet.

Like my Valentine Heart where I only used spindles, 2 of these pieces are a spindle sliced in half.

I used 1 inch finish nails to attach, though some of the nails were too long and I had to chop off the ends.

You could also use builders adhesive or a combination of the two.  If you are only using your egg indoors you could use wood glue.

If you glued, you’re going to have to wait for the glue to dry.

Otherwise, take your egg back to the scroll saw (or jigsaw) and cut around the edge leaving a 1/2″ overhang.  You don’t want to see the plywood backing poking out.

Hand sand or use a  Sander to soften the cut edges.

You could fill in the nail holes with plastic wood, I just filled mine with some of the leftover paint.

Use to decorate indoors or out.  When I finished my Valentine heart, I had a couple people tell me they would have used it on their front door, so this egg is the same idea as the Valentine without the pallet wood backing.

Have a great week.  Stay inspired.
