Flower Power to Vintage Chic

Today I present to you my latest thrift store find! I have a weakness for old wooden boxes, whether it is a tool box, jewelry box, file box, feed box… and if it has tiny drawers…double bonus. As you might imagine an old apothecary cabinet would be heaven.
OK, this find wasn’t quite old and it wasn’t quite wood (I’m thinking particle board) but it did have tiny drawers. I’m seeing potential.
Other than a few scuffs and a handwritten “Alexis” penned into the side, the jewelry box was in terrific shape.
I know this makeover won’t be for everyone but my flower power days went out with the 60’s and I don’t have any young daughters.
Since there wasn’t real wood under all the flowers, instead of stripping off the paint I’m building it up.
First up, a layer of gray chalk paint to cover all the flowers.
The pretty pink in the drawers didn’t quite go with my future rustic vintage look. Easily remedied with a coat of spray paint.
It was also easier to spray paint the interior of the jewelry box rather than trying to get into all the nooks and crannies.
The entire exterior of the box was painted with black chalk paint.
Use sandpaper or an electric Sander to reveal some of that first layer of chalk paint. If you happen to go too far (like I did) you might just reveal some of those flowers you hid. Retouch with the black paint and let dry.
Finish with a coat of vintage wax and reapply the hardware.
The little knobs were left over from this project but you can find the knobs here.
While at Michael’s Craft Store the other day I couldn’t resist this pad of Collage Mini Paper Stash by Tim Holtz . Thirty six, 8×8 sheets of vintage style collage papers. You will be seeing them again but I couldn’t resist adding a little interest to the interior drawers of the jewelry box.
New York signs cut to fit over the drawers and modpodged in place.
Scuffed up the edge of the paper with sandpaper and added even more vintage wax to blend in with the rest of the box.
I used modpodge again to seal the paper.
Hard to believe it’s the same jewelry box. From Flower Power to Vintage Chic!
The weekend is almost here. Stay inspired.
