Several years ago my middle son, Kevin, living away from home and at college, moved out of his dorm room and into his first apartment with a couple of friends.  Several things from our home found their way down to that first apartment, including our super huge NOT flat screen TV.  This was the kind of TV that stuck out from the wall 4 feet.  He also took an ottoman, our old kitchen table, a big oversized chair, couch, bed…I think there was more but that’s most of the big stuff.

Now the ottoman was important because that is why this sign tray was born.  The ottoman was what was being used as their coffee table.  An ottoman is definitely not a great place to set drinks if you want a stable surface.  Being 3 college aged kids, you know that they had to have some place to put their college aged drinks….you know, milk, orange juice, vitamin water.  A mom can dream can’t she?

Of course my dreams were shattered when they turned my old kitchen table into a BEER PONG TABLE!  What?

Anyway, back to the tray…when  Kevin, lived at home he had several street signs adorning his walls.  I bought him his first sign at an antique store, another was picked up at a flea market. A third sign was retrieved from a signpost that had been flattened by a car…a tread mark still ran up the middle of that sign.  He had taken a couple of the signs down to school to decorate the walls but this one had been left at home.  A great flat surface to hold those wholesome drinks on the ottoman.

Really simple construction.  A half inch piece of plywood cut about 1/2 inch wider  and longer than the sign. Attached an edge  with glue and finishing nails using  leftover pine.   This covered up the edges of the plywood.  The corners were sealed with paintable caulk, just in case the milk was spilled.  The entire tray was given a couple of coats of semi-gloss black paint before attaching the one way sign with Liquid Nails, builders adhesive.

To finish the tray, I attached a couple of handles….

…and golf ball feet.  By using 4 2-way screws ( I don’t know if that is what they are called, but they have the threads on both ends of the screw), I screwed one end into the golf ball and one end into the tray (holes were predrilled).

That tray outlasted most of the other furniture that it moved out with.  The sofa and ottoman were tossed a long time ago as was the huge tv.  The beer pong table is once again a kitchen table and awaits the next user in my storage room.  This tray might be the only thing that has survived his 4 moves.  Ok, maybe it’s not the only thing,  but it is still in use.
