Hand Painted Child’s Table and Chairs

Hand Painted Child’s Table and Chairs

Hand Painted Child's Table and Chairs Set

Welcome back friends, today I have a set of 2 kids chairs,  of course a thrift store find, that I’m going to make into a table and chairs set for  the kids.

These chairs, from Fantasy Fields Kids, are still sold in stores ranging anywhere from $100 to $150.  My cost was less than $10. They’re advertised as hand painted and hand carved with durable wooden construction.

The fronts of the chairs were in great shape.  The backs of the chairs, particularly on the vertical posts, had seen their share of knocks and chipping.

The chairs did not come with a table but I did manage to find this side table for free in my travels.  It was the perfect size and height for a child’s play table.

You may have noticed in the previous photo, my little table had one little flaw.  It’s wood was peeling off.  OK, that’s not wood, it’s not even veneer, it’s more like contact paper.

No worries, the table fit the chairs perfectly and that’s really all that mattered.  I’m going to paint the table anyway.

If I could find an exact color match for the green on the chair I would touch up just the edges.  But first… lightly sand any chippy  paint so you don’t have that chipped paint edge when you repaint.

OK, I couldn’t find the exact same green for color matching so I ended up painting all the green with a Sage green chalk paint I had on hand.  But that was OK, because I’m going to use that same green to paint the table.  And now I’ll have a matching set.

For the table, the existing contact paper wood top came off surprisingly easy.  How it ever held on for 40 or so years is anybody’s guess.

I also removed the randomly placed drawer handle to nowhere and filled in the holes.

Two coats of sage green chalk paint later and my child’s table and chair set is coming together.

Besides the green color overall, now I have to tie these two pieces together to make a set.  I had  roughly the same color blue paint as the chairs (DecoArt, Blue Harbor) for highlights.  The base of the feet is getting the same treatment as the balls on top of the chairs, a grey background with white spots.

More of the same blue as above and an added pink stripe, mixed to closely match the pink in the chairs.

For squiggly and fine lines I’m quickly becoming a fan of these acrylic paint pens.  The same type of pens that were used on the painted rocks.  So much easier to use than a fine tipped paint brush and paint.

When you’re all finished creating your original masterpiece take it outside and spray on 2 coats of a satin polyurethane.

The backs of the chairs, where they were banged up the most, look fresh and new.

A peeling 40 year old side table is given a new life.

I can’t take credit for the design of the chairs, but along with the table they do make a sweet little set.

More Kids Table Ideas

I know you’re not quite ready to decide on how to create  your own kid’s table and chairs just yet.  So I have a few more ideas for you.

This jungle kids table and chairs, an FAO Schwarz copycat, was posted in 2019.  I created this set years ago for my own sons (I’m thinking 1992) and now it lives on in my grandson’s bedroom.

From May, 2016, I bring you this chalk board, town, convertible coffee table.  My son and daughter in law used this for many years for my granddaughters but they finally switched it out for a table with more storage.

Upcycled Stool Child's Table and Chair

Childs Table

Didn’t have to go back as far for this one, from May 2025, an upcycled stool makes a super cute kids table and chair.  This table and chairs now resides at my great nephew’s house.

Decorating a Playhouse, lego table

And last but not least, a super easy project .  Find an existing kids table and chairs and glue on Lego platforms to create your own Lego table.  This was from the playhouse I created for my son.

Until next time, stay inspired.
