Upcycled Brass Pole 4 Ways

Upcycled Brass Pole 4 Ways

Thrift Store Brass Pole

I’ve been working on a wooden table all week and that is what I planned to bring you today.  So close, but that project is still tacky and not quite ready for his closeup so today I’m bringing you my latest thrift store find, a 3 foot tall, 7 pound brass pole.

The pole is just slightly tarnished from age, but he’s sturdy and he was just calling to me…I’m cool, I’m useful, put me to work. For being solid brass and only $5 he was  coming home with me.

Interestingly enough, the brass pole was able to unscrew into several smaller pieces.

The top of the brass pole also had something else screwed to it at one point.

Right now it is way too narrow to add anything to the top without tipping but at the moment I was thinking birdbath base.

Shopping with my sister at the thrift store I happened to mention I was on the lookout for a birdbath top.

She goes home and returns with this beautiful , signed, hand thrown pottery shallow bowl.  OK, it pretty much looks perfect for my brass pole but it’s way too nice for my little birdy friends.

Not that my birds aren’t worth it, it’s just that I haven’t had much luck with bird bath tops.  Twice I’ve let the bird bath sit out too long in the season and the freezing water has cracked the bowl.  My last bird bath was toppled by an over zealous squirrel or deer.  Nope, this bowl was far too nice for me.

My next thrift store excursion I spied this plastic shallow bowl on sale for $3.  Too shallow? Maybe.  Too light? Probably.  But it probably won’t break.

I needed something to go down into the pole for stability and something flat on which my bird bath would sit.

In my stash of junk I found this foot long pole, a nut and a flange.  Glued together with E6000 glue, I now had something sturdy on which my birdbath could perch.

Use lots of glue and let it dry completely.

Glue to your new birdbath.

If you choose not to make the birdbath, use this same flange and pole with the other projects I’m about to show you.

Brass Pole Bird Bath

brass pole lamp

Since this brass pole looks like it could have been a lamp or floor lamp in it’s prior life, making a lamp from the base isn’t quite a stretch.  I would probably only use one or two of the sections, as a 3 foot tall table lamp is quite tall and that’s without the shade.

Brass Pole candle stick

Again, with the flange for stability, add a large candle holder and pillar candles to the brass pole.  Or unscrew the sections and  create several smaller candle holders.

Thrift Store Wooden Tray

My last idea was to add a wooden top and make a  side table from the pole.

This  $4 thrift store find was made of beautiful wood and was marked  “family and friends gather here.”  Nice sentiment, not quite my cup of tea.

With a little sandpaper, the little sharpie sentiment is no more.  Now it’s just a beautiful wood round.

Before I go on to the side table…you could just add a couple of handles and now you have a cute little cheese board.

Brass Pole side table

As for the side table, add the flange and pole for stability and now you have a handy little occasional table.

All great ideas unless you have a dog with a big fat tail that wags a lot. That first idea where you had the really nice top but thought it too easily tipped over…..when I find myself in that position I try to find a sneaky way to tie the pole to something.or weigh down the base.
Something I have seen recently are lamps that are taken apart leaving a flat top, painted and a basket of flowers attached to the flat top, it looks really nice. So all you have to do is remove all the electrical stuff and the harp; could keep a lot of lamps out of the landfil! If I may say one more thing about that brass pole with the nice top, in the cooler winter months the brass will get warmed from the sun and keep the water from freezing a little longer.
