DIY Home Decor, Wood Wall Quilt

Today we’re back in my son’s airbnb in Luray, Virginia. Specifically, we’re back in the garage. It’s the same garage I made this barn quilt for back in 2023.

This was the interior of the garage before they moved in. Tons of space…and wood…and cinderblocks…and garagey stuff. Since they didn’t need a garage and they couldn’t let a good space go to waste they decided to convert it into a rec room for the airbnb.

Like the playroom on the property, it’s a work in progress.
Most of the signs of the former garage have disappeared and have been replaced with family friendly games and activities. While it’s a fun place to hang out, the walls are still in need of some color.

The main problem in the rec room is the overabundance of OSB plywood. It’s that chippy plywood that’s made up of wood chips. It’s hard to paint and it’s hard to cover. It’s everywhere, on every wall and covering the ceiling.

OK, now you’ve been shown the problem, I’ll show you the solution my son and his wife came up with.
Their idea was to cover a portion of the wall with giant wooden wall quilts keeping with the theme of the barn quilt on the outside of the building. The picture above shows the quilt squares and the color schemes. Today we were just working with the one in the above right corner, the easiest of the three.
These would not be small little quilts, each one would be 8 feet by 8 feet, broken down into 16 , 24 x 24″ squares. Big quilts, big impact.
While it would have been nice to tackle all of the walls in one day, we only had time to tackle one of the designs and only one of the walls.
It wasn’t the quilt that took a long time, my daughter in law had done a lot of prep, it was the wall needing at least 3 coats of paint.

For each quilt you will need to buy 2, 4×8 sheets of plywood.
If you need to, have the lumberyard cut the wood as small as you need to fit it into your car. This was 1/2″ sanded plywood. You can get the rougher grade, it’s cheaper, but you’ll have to do more prep work to get a smooth surface.
Once you’re home, or still at the lumberyard, cut the wood into 16, 2 foot by 2 foot squares.

Use a primer on the fronts and edges of all your squares. Lightly sand any bumps and wipe clean.

Each board was taped and masked for overspray then 2 coats of spray paint.

Remove the tape when dry and you’re ready for your next color or nailing to the wall.

Use a level to line up your design, especially for that first row. Nail your squares into place.

Before I get any comments, we still need to change out the color of the wall switch plate covers. We just had no time for another trip to the store.

Nothing left to do but the cleanup.

This space has been decorated with the budget in mind. Lots of DIY.
You can find the game table here and the DIY chess set here.

Elsewhere in the room is this old oak dining room table top perched upon a found metal barrel. The counter height chairs are all from the thrift store as are the games and the lamp.

Way in the back left corner is my upcycled ladder converted into storage for darts, ping pong paddles and balls.
The leather chairs in the foreground, the ping pong table and the orange chairs next to the gaming table are all from Facebook Marketplace. Yes, you can absolutely decorate on a budget and that wall quilt adds such an amazing burst of color to tie everything together.
Until next time, stay inspired.

I love those quilts! Have they actually rented that out?
Love the idea of breaking down the large wooden “quilt” into sections of wood. What an ingenious idea. I’ve been looking for some quilt ideas for our garage & this is spot on
