25 Fantastic Before and After Furniture Makeovers

I love a good before and after furniture makeover and my Facebook algorithm has finally figured that out. So after weeks of ogling tons of makeovers I finally decided to compile an assortment of my favorites. No how-tos this time just a bunch of inspiration.
If you want to follow any of the original posters, just click on any of the following contributors. MTB24, The Vintage Makeover, Dream House, Tidy Tim, and Jessie Smith.
Most of these before and after photos are painted. Only a few have retained any of their original wood look. I’m just guessing, but for a really good before and after photo the entire look of the piece would need to change, otherwise it would just be a restoration, and those really, for the most part, do not make for a good before and after shot. So, if you do not like painted wood pieces this post is definitely not for you. If you do like painted wood pieces I hope you get tons of ideas for your next project.
Side Tables, End Tables, Nightstands
If you’re like me , you probably don’t realize how many side tables, end tables and nightstands you’re using in your house. One or two next to every bed, one or two next to every couch, maybe even one alongside your favorite easy chair. You need ideas!

It’s always nice to find bedside tables that match but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker. While paint made these 2 tables look similar, if you look closer, the legs have been modified to make them the same height and the knobs were changed and positioned so that the 2 are now matching. You would never notice the difference unless they were positioned side by side. Check out my own set of mismatched side tables here.
Dressers or Buffets
Having a hard time finding a sturdy dresser or buffet for a good price? Stop shopping at IKEA, that stuff will probably not stand the test of time. Start shopping at Thrift stores, garage sales, Grandma’s hand me downs and Facebook Marketplace. Look for dovetailed drawers , sturdy legs, drawers that open and close easily and solid wood. Knicks, scratches, dents and gouges can be minimized by wood filler and sanding. Don’t let cosmetic details stop you from buying that perfect piece.
If you don’t like the knobs or handles those can easily be switched out for a more modern design.

Bookshelves and Media Centers
Media centers and large bookcases have been pushed out in many homes in favor of oversized televisions mounted on the wall. This works out in your favor, large scale bookcases and cabinets can often be acquired very inexpensively. You just might have to think outside of the box for how to incorporate these unloved bookshelves into your home.

This wall unit hardly looks like the original piece. All the doors have been removed and painting the shelves the same color as the wall makes it look built in.

These bookshelves may be one of my favorite repurposes. Having solid wood organizers in the closet is stunning. You just have to add a few bars for clothes hanging.
2 Piece Dining room Hutch, Buffet, China Cabinets
The following 7 photos all show 2 piece dining room hutches. Some have been separated and now are used as 2 distinct pieces of furniture. A few have lifted the top half of the piece and mounted it on the wall above the original lower half. All have been painted. Choose your favorite.

Desk, Coffee Bar

This is a great example where you can still keep some of the wood finish but still cover up the top when it has gotten years of abuse.

Love the idea of a coffee bar from an old media center though I would probably have added another shelf where the lights are now hanging. Personally, I always like more storage. Would you have removed the doors?
I hope you took away tons of ideas from these 25 furniture makeovers. Make sure you pin the ones you like so you can find it again when you’re ready to do your own piece.
Time to get started and as always, stay inspired.

Hi Joan,
Great post as usual. So many good ideas; the change adding color and new hardware is really dramatic and updating, wish more people could do this. We have a “transfer station” in my town for large stuff and to see some of the furniture going into the trash is really heartbreaking.
I for one could not have remove lower doors on cabinets, my kitties would be in there taking naps in a heartbeat!
I could see a nice little cat bed. They might love it.
