20 Small Backyard Landscaping Ideas

One year ago I shared with you a compilation of 20 landscaping ideas for those of you with a long narrow backyard.  It was mostly for my oldest son who had just moved into a house with a very long and narrow backyard with barely any landscaping.

Well today’s post is meant for my youngest son.  He has a townhouse with a very small backyard.  When I needed a new tree for my backyard he sent me a nice compilation of all the trees that might be suitable for my space, so now I’m returning the favor and giving him some ideas for his space.

This small backyard has everything I need.  A place to eat with shade and a fantastic hot tub to soak.

Swap out the hot tub for a hammock and no grass to mow in this small backyard.

For such a small back yard they managed to get in so much character.  The lattice, vines, pots and lanterns embrace you like a hug.

This backyard may be small but it carries a big impact with oversized lighting and plenty of lounging.

Forget the mowing in this small backyard and just enjoy the peaceful sounds of the fountain. My mom liked to use white flowers in her landscaping because even at night you could still make out the blooms.

A chiminea warms up the corner of this small back yard. Lots of privacy and low maintenance make this backyard a winner.

When your backyard is a balcony , it doesn’t mean you can’t have privacy, a eating area and greenery.

Another balcony makes a small backyard but when you have a view it seems to go on forever.

I hope you were able to gather an idea or two from these 20 gorgeous backyard ideas.  I think all of them had some sort of dining or sitting area.   Whether on a deck or a balcony or just the backyard, they all incorporated plants and trees into the landscaping. Most of the landscaping designs had a focal point and many used a hardscaping material such as bricks, rocks or pavers.  I was surprised that lighting was not as big an element as I would have imagined.
