Plaid Stencil Vintage Typing Desk
Plaid Stencil Vintage Typing Desk
Welcome back friends. Today I have a cute little typing desk that is all ready for his makeover. He was probably used about mid-century, long before the day of computers and word processing machines, faxes and emails.
This little guy is in great shape, but the industrial beige color has got to go.
This is the only the second time I’ve come upon a vintage typing desk and I believe I got this one from my sister who frequents yard sales, estate sales and thrift stores far more than me.
You can find my last typing desk here. It is also painted black with a slightly different shelf and decoration.
For this typing desk, I started out by spraying all of the metal parts of the desk with a satin black spray paint.
Use painters tape to cover any areas of the desk you would like to not be painted.
It is always best to spray outdoors whenever possible so I was extremely happy to have a mild winter day to do my spraying.
I’m going to cover the lower shelf, and the cut out on the shelf where your legs would have gone, with reclaimed wood.
Cut your wood to size and sand.
To attach the wood shelf, predrill the metal shelf with a made for metal drill bit.
Use wood screws and attach the wood shelf screwing from underneath.
I bought a fairly inexpensive buffalo plaid stencil from Amazon. It came with 6, 9 inch stencils for only $3.19.
Use painters tape to securely hold the stencil (stencils) in place.
The 9 inch square stencil was not large enough to cover the entire table at once but I made it work with a little overlap and going back over the areas that were missed on the first go-round.
Use a stencil brush, apply just a little paint to the end of the brush, dab off the excess then dab on your paint. The brush should be extremely dry at all times to prevent paint bleed.
Final touch was a thrift store basket for added storage.
Here you can finally see the added wooden shelf and the basket without the lacy cloth liner.
For a little added protection, spray on a coat of clear matte varnish to protect the buffalo plaid tabletop.
Such a cute little typing table with the added functionality of drop down leaves.
As always, stay inspired.
