DIY Outside Corner Molding for Cheap

DIY Outside Corner Molding for Cheap

I’m working on a great project…can’t share it with you yet because it’s still in progress.  But as with any new project  I always seems to make multiple trips to the hardware store.

On this particular day I was shopping for about 11 feet of outside corner molding.  I love how the molding gives a nice finished edge to a piece no matter how rough the wood is underneath.  Usually when I need the molding I’m only using a couple feet (like this coffee table) so I wasn’t as concerned about the price, but this time 11ft at roughly $4 a foot is $44. Let’s just say, I did not buy the molding.

I did have a 2×4 at home.  Could I make my own outside corner molding?  The only way to find out was to try.

If you want to try this project yourself you will absolutely need a table saw or know someone who has one.

Adjust the fence on your table saw so it is exactly the width of a standard 2×4.

With the adjusted table saw fence, run your 2×4 thru the saw.  If you turn the board over you’ll have enough wood to run it thru twice potentially giving you 16 feet of outside corner molding.

After one pass thru the table saw you’ll have one square piece of wood complete with 2 nice rounded edges.

Adjust the depth of the saw blade so that it does not cut all the way thru the square block of wood.  Try to leave about 1/4″ above the saw blade.

Adjust the fence of the table saw so that your cut is about 1/4″ wide.

Feed your square block thru the table saw and you’ll already have half your cuts.

To finish your  outside corner molding you’ll have to make one more pass thru the table saw.  Don’t change the saw blade in any way, you’re just going to flip the board around and make one more pass.

One 8 foot 2×4 gives you enough wood to make 16 ft of outside corner molding.  (16 ft x $3.86 ft = $61.76)

Even more if you want to convert the square inner piece into 16 ft of mini molding.

If you don’t own a table saw you may need to hunt down someone who does.  It will definitely be worth your while.

Until next time, stay inspired.
