Faux Concrete Paint with Baking Soda
This one is for all my crafting friends out there.
I’ve collected these birds and the candlesticks over the past few weeks in hopes of trying a faux concrete paint finish using chalk paint and baking soda. It seems super easy and I can’t wait to get started.
There was really nothing wrong with any of the existing paint colors but someone had to be my paint test volunteer.
Gather your supplies… a chippy paint brush, baking soda, white chalk paint and a paint color that is as close to a concrete color as you can find. This is Mineral from Waverly paints.
You could also experiment with any color paint that you’d like to have a rough concrete feel.
Before I even began I saved the two little white birds from their paint finish. They were just too cute on their own and they now live perched on my pallet wood knickknack shelf.
I still had the blue bird and candle sticks and they eagerly awaited their inevitable fate.
Is it me, or is that beak really long?
Both the candlesticks and the votive bird got a initial coat of white chalk paint.
Mix up your “concrete” paint. This is about 1/2 baking soda and 1/2 paint. Mix well. The measurements do not have to be exact.
Use your chippy paint brush and dab the concrete mixture onto your project. You don’t want to have brush strokes.
Try to cover the original finish, but if you leave a little white showing thru, that is perfectly OK. No concrete has a perfect finish.
Let the concrete paint dry and your project is complete.
I wanted to show you a little of the concrete texture.
And the candlesticks. They look like concrete but are not nearly as heavy.
One more closeup of the baking soda texture.
If you have too many candlesticks, add a little E6000 glue and use the candlestick as a pedestal.
This is a past project, a lazy susan, all ready for cupcakes!
I think it’s time to hit up your local thrift store for any little thing that could use a concrete paint makeover. Besides little knickknacks, you could also consider vases, pots, pumpkins. The skies the limit.
Have fun, until next time, stay inspired.
Very cool effect. Totally Tromped my L’oi!
I see what you did there! 🙂
Thanks for another great tutorial!!
Love this. Does it have to be chalk paint mixed in or can you acrylic or latex paint?
Thank you
This is a new technique to me and I LOVE IT! Excellent tutorial, thank you! I’m about to cementify a few things around here.
I did this and it came out great! Even added mixed some darker green with the baking soda to add “moss” I guess this would be good for somewhere that it won’t get wet, or have you sealed this with a matt finish and tried it outside?
