Reclaimed wood and Corrugated Metal Heart

Reclaimed Wood and Corrugated Metal Heart

Hi friends.  Sorry I missed my post last week, I was visiting my niece in upstate New York.  She and her husband had recently purchased an old farmhouse, 1850’s ish,  and my sister and I offered our limited fix it skills to help get a renovation underway.

Hope you like a before and after.  This is the room we worked on for most of our trip. It needed drywall seams fixed, holes patched, sanded, 1 coat of primer, and 2 coats of white.  Not to mention years and years of paint drips scraped off of the old farmhouse floors.

More color is not always a good thing.  Fresh and new, clean and bright, the after shot of the bedroom.  It still needs a few things, i.e. curtains, headboard, but the color palette, white, is calm and relaxing.

The time we spent in New York wasn’t all work. On one of our trips into town we stopped off at the stunning Ithaca Falls.

Did I mention that it’s cold this time of year in upstate New York?

And only a few blocks from her new home is the equally gorgeous Salmon Creek or Ludlowville Falls.

Now back to my project for the week.  A heart, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Of course I have to use some kind of reclaimed element. This fence board I picked up on one of my travels, it was the only thing left from an old farm.  I absolutely love any board with character built in.  Yes, I have had to throw away some of my character filled boards when they’ve disintegrated, but this one has managed to hold its shape and integrity.

I cut the heart shape from corrugated tin last year but I wasn’t happy with the roughness of the edges so I never used it.  I’m getting over my rough edge dilemma by putting the edges of the heart beneath the fence board.

Cut the fence board into 3 equal lengths.  These are 14″ each.

One  piece of the fence board bumped out and one bowed in so those were my outside boards.

Cut a paper heart to use as a pattern that can fit easily inside the cut fence boards. This one is 10 inches tall.

Trace around your pattern onto the fence backing.

I’m using a tabletop scroll saw to cut out my heart.  A handheld jigsaw would work just as well.

Sand off any splintery edges of your wood.

Cut off any excess corrugated tin.  I used a grinder with a metal cutting blade but you could also use tin snips since you won’t be worried about the smoothness of your edges.

Turn the whole thing over and attach the corrugated metal to the fence board with nails and scrap wood.

I couldn’t possibly throw away the cutout part of the heart so I attached those pieces together with nails and scrap wood as well.

Drill a hole and attach a ribbon, your heart is ready for hanging.

Keep scrolling for more upcycled heart ideas. Do you have a favorite?  Mine is always the one I’m working on at the time.

Until next time, stay inspired.
