Throw Rug Pillow Cover, Thrift Store Makeover

Throw Rug Pillow Cover, Thrift Store Makeover

Welcome back!  I know I skipped a post last week but I was on vacation with the family in beautiful Gatlinburg, Tennessee.   We rented a wonderful log cabin overlooking the Smoky Mountains.  Lots of hikes, bear sightings, shopping and adventures.  For my birthday the  kids took me to a bunch of craft stores where  I took pictures  of  things that I hope will inspire you to get your creativity on.  Most of the crafters were way beyond my skill level, those being professional painters, carvers, basket makers, leatherworkers and potters…but there is always something that I can put my own spin on..  I’ll share  those pics some time in the future.  There really is inspiration everywhere.

As for now I have an easy, crafty, throw rug DIY pillow cover.  Perfect for the beginner sewer, it only has 2 machine sewed seams on each pillow.

For this project I’m using 2 thrift store pillows marked $4 each but it was half price day….$4 for the pair!  The  pillows were also marked “disinfected”, don’t know what they do with the pillows, but it sounds good to me. I also bought 2 cotton rugs from Marshalls on clearance for $6 each to make the pillow covers.

I did have to exchange the bottom rug, it wasn’t quite wide enough to cover my pillows.

If you’re buying a pillow from a thrift store, confirm that the pillow has plenty of bounce and preferably is not stuffed with  loose fiber fill. Do a little investigation before you buy. Unzip the pillow, making sure the stuffing is enclosed in it’s own casing.  This is one of my pillows that came with my couch. You can use the stuffing, but I personally would not recommend  it.

I mentioned that my pillows were $2 each, compare that to Michaels price of $22.

Wrap the rug around the pillow insert overlapping in the middle on one side.  This is a 2′ x 4′ rug which just about fit perfectly around my 22″ pillow.

I say almost perfectly because I would prefer more overlap.

With right sides together, pin your 2 outside seams making sure you have the ends overlap in the middle of the pillow.  Pull out the pillow insert.

Sew those two side seams.  The center remains open.

Turn the pillow right side out.

Stuff with the pillow insert.

Hand sew the opening closed.  If your rugs overlap  more than mine does (about an inch) you can skip this step.

Perfect floor pillows and an easy project for the beginning sewer. Until next time, stay inspired.
