DIY Upcycled Frame
Fantastic news in the Scavenger Chic household, on March 5th, my oldest son Keith and his wife Steph welcomed their second daughter into the world. Introducing Hazel Laurel who joins 2 year old, big sister Afton.
I may be just a little biased but she is adorable, sweet and beautiful and still rather sleepy.
Hubby and I were able to see her, not in the hospital, because that is still off limits, but in her home if we promised to be strictly quarantined for the week prior. We stuck with our quarantine and were rewarded with being able to hold this loveable bundle of joy.
Ahhhh, new baby smells!!
Along with a new grandchild comes a new (old) frame. This one is created from pallet wood, shutter slats, a piece of house siding and the glass.
If you do not have a piece of glass, head to the dollar store and buy an inexpensive frame. If you don’t have a piece of siding with the lip, you may be able to use a piece of hardwood flooring or create your own with a table saw.
Use a miter saw on the piece of siding to create a picture frame around the glass. The glass will rest on the lip.
Unfortunately the saw was a little rough on the corners, those splintered edges will have to be repaired.
I glued the frame together (let dry) and filled in the splintered corners with wood putty then sanded.
The wood glue holds the frame together for now but the addition of the pallet wood will give the corners strength.
Because I had to patch the corners I chose to paint the siding white.
Cut pallet wood to fit around the border of the frame. This is 3 inch pallet wood, split in half lengthwise to give me 1 1/2″ strips.
Sand the pallet wood well.
Because this is a baby frame, I chose to lighten up the pallet wood to give a softer effect.
The long top piece is untreated pallet wood. The whitest part of the bottom slat (on the right) is painted with white wax and the lower left corner, on the same piece of pallet wood, is the effect you get when the excess white wax is rubbed off.
I lightly sanded the inner siding frame to reveal some of the original blue gray color.
With a nail gun, I attached the pallet wood to the siding. You could also use wood glue or finish nails.
Last step was to finish off the edges with a frame. These are leftover shutter slats from a previous project. They are already painted, they are the perfect width and they come with a nice rounded edge. It’s like it was meant to be.
I sanded down the corners of the shutter slats to get a nice rounded edge then touched up with black paint.
Screw on frame turn buttons to the back to hold your glass and picture in place. Add a couple pieces of cardboard if needed.
I personalized my frame with letter punches the name and date of birth at the bottom of the frame. I used TEKTON 5/32-Inch Letter and Number Stamp Set available from Amazon. These letters are made from steel so after an initial purchase you’ll have them forever.
This is my third welcome baby frame and I look forward to making many more. 🙄
Have a great week, stay inspired.
If you need more upcycled frame inspiration or if you just like looking at sleeping baby pics, these are my last 2 DIY baby frames.
Congratulations, she is beautiful and so is her big sister!
Congrats on the adorable granddaughter!
How beautiful! You are a lucky Grandma…
Nice frame, a believer in pallet wood!
Thank you, and you can’t go wrong with pallet wood.
Congratulations Joan, she’s beautiful!
Thanks Marie, I’m feeling very blessed.
Congratulations on another grandbaby! The frame is fantastic. The first pictures had me thinking the end result would be a dark frame, then plot twist we end up with a light frame. The color and texture of the pallet wood reminds me of driftwood and match the photograph beautifully.
