Upcycled Chandelier, Bird Feeder or Candle Holder

Before I forget, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Because it’s the holidays I’m bringing you a very easy project for your DIY inspiration, an upcycled chandelier 2 ways.
You’ll just need an old chandelier and a small vintage pie pan…feel free to make substitutions depending on whatever you have on hand.
The piece above was from this old chandelier I tore down from my house probably 5 years ago or more. It was in a pile that was headed for the thrift store when it got a reprieve and I changed my mind at the last second. I liked the trio of lights on the inside.
That trio of lights became this orb chandelier. That was a project from 2014, so you know how long the outer iron piece has been sitting around and collecting dust.
I was cleaning out my storage room last week, nothing too dramatic, it was just getting harder to walk and I needed to clear a pathway when I saw this piece, I’m thinking, that thing sure would make a great candle holder. And I had just enough time to give this guy a facelift before I needed to start cooking.
Spray paint the chandelier the color of your choice. I’m using black to give it a wrought iron look.
If you would like the candle holder to hang, this screw eye with a tightly fastened wing nut should do the job. I have no idea what happened to the hook that originally held up the chandelier so I had to improvise.
Glue the pie pan on to the chandelier with some type of glue that will withstand the elements such as gorilla glue, super glue or a marine glue.
So here I am gluing the pie pan to the chandelier and thinking, wow that would also make a really cute bird feeder. So I’m going to go on just a slight detour before getting to the candle holder.
Chandelier Bird Feeder
Attach a chain and your bird feeder is ready to hang.
It started to rain shortly after I hung the feeder and the few holes that were already in the pie tin did a great job of draining. The hook is a Heavy Duty Hook, 37 Inch Polewhich attaches directly to the deck. It swivels to allow for easy filling of the feeder.
My first visitor hopped around on the lower part of the chandelier for a while. He eventually got brave enough to try out the sunflower seeds.
I stayed and watched a while and had a bunch of small birds coming in for the feast. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough to catch a woodpecker that happened by.
In my yard I wouldn’t be able to keep this bird feeder out for any length of time because my squirrels are relentless, though I have enjoyed watching all my visitors. Normally a squirrel proof feeder hangs from the hook and does a pretty good job of deterring the squirrels.
My last visitor of the day before I took the feeder down. This cardinal had been checking my feeder out all day before she got up enough nerve to settle down. I think she was still keeping an eye on me.
Create a Chandelier Candle Holder
I took the bird feeder down because I really wanted to create the candle holder. All the work was already done I just had to unscrew the eye bolt and remove the chain.
If you’d like a hanging candle holder just leave everything as is and clean out the bird seed.
Whether you intend to make a bird feeder or a candle holder, keep an eye out for an old chandelier with good bones.
Stay inspired.
You had some very pretty visitors in the short life span of your bird feeder. It looks awesome as a candle holder too! Dang squirrels.
I absolutely love all your upcycles. Have been thinking about what to do with my old chandeliers after remodel. Now I know just what to make. Thanks
Nice! I like both ideas!
Lovely and ingenious….great idea for birds, now if the squirrels would leave it alone! LOL.
This is one of my favorite projects – I’m scouring the lighting section every time I’m in a flea market or thrift store!
