Nautical Salad Bowl Mirror

Over Memorial weekend my local thrift store had a half price sale for everything in the store. I’ve been looking for a wooden salad bowl for a couple of months now and to find one on half price day, even better.
My only issue with 1/2 price day are the crowds. I had already picked up a candle holder, the salad bowl, an iron wine rack and a few more things when I decide to look thru one more rack. I park my cart at the end of an aisle so I didn’t have to maneuver around anybody and when I returned the cart was gone. Maybe I didn’t park it where I thought I parked it. Up and down the aisles I go…it was nowhere. I’m looking at everybody’s cart now. Nothing. I checked the wood aisle where I originally found my salad bowl. Nothing.
As you can see, I did eventually find my salad bowl and most of my stuff tucked away in the corner of the store. I knew no one wanted my very scratched up salad bowl. Since there were no more carts available, I’m pretty sure someone helped themselves to my unattended cart.
I’m pairing the salad bowl with a round mirror. The salad bowl makes a perfect frame, it’s solid wood and nice and deep. You can find the round mirrors at any of the major craft stores for only a few dollars.
Since I went thru so much trouble retrieving this wandering salad bowl and it took me a couple months to find him, I can’t wait to give him a nautical look with blue and white stripes.
Paint the bowl, inside and out white. This is white chalk paint, but I could have also used white trim paint. You don’t have to paint where the mirror will sit or the bottom of the salad bowl since that will be against the wall.
Let the first coat dry and use a second coat of paint if necessary to cover any thin spots.
I’m attempting to use painters tape to get a nice clean line for my nautical stripes. Since the bowl is slanted only part of the tape went on smoothly. I knew I was gonna get lots of paint bleed.
Paint your stripes with navy blue paint.
Again, let dry and give a second coat where needed.
The painters tape gave me a good start but I did have a lot of touch ups to do to get a nice smooth line.
Repeat the painters tape and paint for the inside of the bowl.
If you used chalk paint, get rid of the chalky feel with a final coat of clear wax.
Use a nice strong builders adhesive to attach the mirror to the bowl.
The only thing left to do is hang your salad bowl.
If you use a lot of D-Ring Picture Hangers, you may want to buy them in bulk from Amazon. The link is for a pack of 50 for $14.45. It’s a better deal than the 2 pack D rings from Home Depot for $2.28. (29 cents vs $1.14)
I’m going to keep an eye out for a couple more salad bowls, I can totally see this as a grouping of 3 mirrors and they wouldn’t have to be identical.
Out in the sunshine you can really tell that I used navy blue.
Stay inspired and start looking for a salad bowl (or 3).
Great project!! I love it!!
Looks really good, I really like the two-tone. Putting up a trio would be a really cute idea. Keep up the good work!
In my area wooden bowls are pretty pricey even if they are beat up! Don’t know why??
Looks great! I love the nautical look and haven’t put any of it in my house. Didn’t realize until just now.
There is a blue 3M masking tape, thinner and very smooth, that doesn’t bleed as badly as normal blue or green masking tape. (Though on you wooden bowl who knows?) I have had major fails with that green frog tape! This other blue is super. Mine has 3M’s logo printed all along the tape. I hoard it for two-color painting edges, having fought bleeding in the past.
Great tip. Normally I stay away from the painters tape because of the bleed but who knows, I could be converted.
What a great idea and wooden bowel repurpose, Joan! Love the nautical stripes. Glad you eventually found your loot.
