Poo Pipe Upcycle!

Upcycled, Recycled Pipe DIY Lamp

Isn’t this the most perfect pipe you’ve ever seen?  It has a nice case of crusty rust, it’s the perfect height for a nice lamp, (which I see in this guys future)  and best of all…it was free.

You may be surprised that this beauty was a dump find?  No?  You’re not surprised?

More than likely, this was probably a poo pipe in it’s past life.  Thankfully rust has overtaken any signs of that past life.

The broken piece found at the top of the pipe was easily knocked off with a hammer.

Deep inside the rust was a beautiful pipe longing to be free.  I’m using a grinder with a sanding attachment, but you could easily use an electric sander.  It might also be wise to use a dust mask.

I wanted a block of wood inside the pipe to have something to nail to for my future lamp and to give the lamp fixture some stability.  Instead of hitting my scrap wood pile and cutting a round piece to fit inside the pipe it was a whole lot easier to just hit the log pile.

Where you see the white of the wood was the little amount of trimming that had to be done before I just pounded it into place.

If the log insert is loose, squeeze some glue along the sides and let set.

The round wood is the perfect addition to hide all the ugly edges.  Look in the wood pieces section or the clock works section of your local craft store.

With the same grinder, this time with a cutting attachment, I’m notching out a little of the base next to the old screw hole.  This will be where the lamp wire will sit, cutting it out so that the lamp will sit flat.

Attach the wood round to the lamp with finish nails and wood glue.

Use a long 3/8″ drill bit to drill all the way through the top wood round and log insert.

Finish the top wood round.

  • paint with black chalk paint, let dry
  • follow with a coat of red chalk paint, let dry
  • sand off the edges and a little of the red paint to reveal the black underneath
  • finish with a coat of vintage wax, buff with fine steel wool when dry

You can leave the pipe with a natural finish but I’ve sprayed mine with a spray poly.

At this point, as I do with all my lamps, I’ll refer you back to an earlier post,  How to Wire a Lamp,  it saves me a lot of typing for each lamp.

Recycled , Upcycled Pipe Lamp DIYUse felt or any other similar fabric hot glued to the bottom of the lamp to prevent furniture scratches.

Ha Ha, you are too funny! Beg to differ though, most original poo pipes were clay. What you have is probably part of an old water main, commercial one at that. What a cool relic and a very interesting lamp.

Wow, it turned out lovely. I can’t say I would’ve had the vision for that same poo pipe. Love the creative mind of yours.
