Driftwood Bone Fish

Wood fish

A couple weeks ago while I was showing you my inspiration from all over, I showed you this wooden fish that I found in a gift shop somewhere in Maine.

He’s really cute with his beautifully sanded wood, but I envisioned driftwood bones, especially since I had  recently  scavenged a pile of driftwood.  And better yet, driftwood  would require a lot less work.

You don’t need many supplies to make a bony fish…just a piece of weathered scrap wood, a few pieces of driftwood (you don’t need nearly as much as I’m showing) and a couple of marbles.

Line up pieces of driftwood, or fish bones, from large to small.  The number of bones is up to you.

On your scrap wood, draw your fish tale.  If you mess up or have extra lines like I do, either cut inside your marked line or sand off any extra.

Do the same with the fish head.  Use a scroll saw, jigsaw or band saw to cut out.

Chop another piece of driftwood into a bunch of bite sized pieces.  These will be your spacers between the bones.

Sand all the edges of both the head and the tail.  Round off any cut edges of the bones so that they look like they’ve been rounded by the waves.

Drill holes thru all your fishy layers.

This was the part of the project that took the longest.  While drilling thru the spacers, bones and tails were fast and easy, trying to drill a hole thru the head took  forever.  My head was too wide for any of my drillbits, so I had to go from both ends and somehow meet up in the middle.

String all your pieces together.  I’m using picture hanging wire…I had it on hand, it’s strong and it’s flexible.

If you’d like your fish to have an eye, I have an easy solution.  Drill a 1/2 inch hole about 1/4 inch deep and glue in a marble.

I painted the wire black and wrapped it around another piece of driftwood for hanging.

Hope you have a big pile of driftwood because I have a little more driftwood inspiration just for you.

Stay inspired.
