Easy Upcycled Doodle Table

My son’s girlfriend is moving into her first apartment and I’ve been enjoying helping her find a few things to fill up her big empty space. When she needed a dresser, I matched her up with my brother who was tossing his. I also hooked her up with kitchen chairs from my brother-in-law who just happened to be moving and getting rid of his. Now she’s on the hunt for a side table and I have the perfect idea for her. She’s artistic and creative, what could be better than a doodle table. I don’t even know if that’s a thing but it is now.
I already had the stool, a past thrift store find, when I spied this lazy susan at another thrift store last week. The top was exactly the same size as the wood rounds I’ve used for past table tops but at only $3, it was much cheaper.
I could have taken the lazy susan portion off of the table round but decided to use as is. It could be fun spinning your side table…tissues on the other side of the table…spin…can’t reach your book…spin…need to turn off the alarm clock…spin.
Put the two pieces together, instant side table.
If you’d like a little more storage, cut wood to fit for shelves and sand the edges.
I’m using my nail gun to attach the shelves to the stool. Make sure any nails or screws you use are shorter than the shelf plus the dowels on the stool.
Use black chalk paint or chalk board paint on both the stool and top.
Screw the stool to the top from underneath the stool and going up.
Look how perfect the top of the stool lined up with the bottom of the lazy susan.
It’s very plain now but all ready for artwork. Get ready to doodle.
You could use chalk pen which will last until you wash it off. You could also use chalk, which is kind of chalky but might be fun in a kid’s playroom.
What I’m using are paint pens which are more permanent. Unlike chalk, if I make a mistake I’ll have to repaint the black.
Now for design. Normally I over plan my pieces and don’t do free form doodles too easily so I went to the Internet for some inspiration where I found these…
I fell in love with Mr. Doodle which is basically what I patterned my doodle after. Check out some of his Youtube videos including a 50 hour doodle marathon.
You could also use your table to work out that complex math problem. This one is from a custom photo wallpaper shop.
Or how about writing down your bucket list.
You could also be inspired by Henna design. This one is from the Etsy shop of Paisleys and Swirls.
Fill it with memories or places you’ve been, like the wedding card box I created last year.
Online this was called a “chalk flower wall at a cafe” though I couldn’t find which cafe to give credit. It does make me want to paint a wall in my house with chalkboard paint.
You could also write down your favorite recipe, favorite quote, grocery list ( though you may want to use chalk for that one) have all your friends sign your table as a guest book or leave their own doodle. The possibilities are endless.
I’m not taking too much time with my design since 5 minutes after I draw on the table I’ll be painting over it.
My doodle was only temporary, it’s already been painted over so the recipient can add her own artwork. I’m expecting great things and I want lots of pictures.
When finished, paint over and start again or seal it with a clear wax.
Find what inspires you.

The last time I painted a piece of furniture with chalkboard paint…
What a clever and practical idea to use the lazy susan on to of the stool. I was thinking that the piece could remain a stool with a swivel seat, too. Great idea for the side table, though.
You mentioned about chalk-painting a wall in your house. You should check this out: http://alisaburke.blogspot.com/ Amazing artist who does wall, floor, deck, etc. painting of enormous, beautiful flowers!
I love it. Her flowers are absolutely gorgeous.
