Newborn Baby Prints

Several months ago I introduced you to my new grandson, Felix. I was thinking that I had to have some kind of baby project for his birthday. Then I remembered the footprint from the Fall Market Days post. The very last photo is a baby footprint on canvas. A perfect project for a brand new baby.
For this project you’ll need a couple 4×4-Inch Canvases.
Paint the canvas with grey or sand chalk paint.
Paint on a top coat of white or off white chalk paint.
Sand the edges slightly to show some of the grey or sand base coat.
Canvases are all ready… So I show up to the hospital on his birthday with paint (I didn’t have a chance to get a stamp pad), a paintbrush and my canvases.
One person holding the baby, the other painting the piggy toes, wet paper towels ready. What could go wrong?
With nothing to blot the foot on, the entire print was way too solid. Didn’t have any more luck with the hands. He was sound asleep but he would not unclench his fists. We were three people trying to open his wiggly fingers and he was having none of it. Those grasping reflexes were working overtime.
Didn’t even have a chance to get anything on the canvas for the handprint because the paint was beginning to dry.
It was a fail.
I was not deterred. A few weeks later I showed up at home with some more white chalk paint to cover the too black footprint and a fresh ink pad.
According to the new mom, Felix’s fist is the most relaxed and unclenched when he is milk drunk.
Sure enough, this is Felix right after feeding, he’s not really asleep just kind of mellow. But just look at that flat hand.
With wet wipes at the ready, we managed to ink up the hand and get a pretty good print.
The foot was much easier, he didn’t even have to be milk drunk, just had to make sure I had nice ink coverage.
It was still a two person job.
I told Felix that he had to cooperate with me now or I’d be still trying until he was 19 and then I’m sure I’d have to get a larger canvas.
Need a baby gift? Why not show up with a baby print DIY kit?
Stay inspired.
