Pesto Jar Makeover with Faux Mercury Glass
After I did the faux mercury glass on the window a couple weeks ago, I still had some of the Rust-Oleum Mirror Spray leftover.
If you don’t have a vintage window for the window project, maybe you have an old jar sitting around. This little jar held pesto up until 2 days ago. Now he’s the centerpiece of this project.
Besides a jar, you’ll also need a paper towel, the mirror effect spray paint, black spray paint, a small knob (though I did change this one out) and a spray bottle with a mixture of half water / half vinegar.
Clean out your jar, dry, then spray the inside with the black spray paint. Let dry.
**When working with spray paint, work outdoors whenever possible
While you still have the paint out, you may want to give the lid a quick spray.
Use the vinegar and water mixture to lightly spray the outside of the jar.
Use the mirror effect spray paint to lightly spray over the vinegar/water mixture. Let dry about 20 seconds and repeat both the water/vinegar and the spray paint. If you think it needs a third coat, apply it now.
Wait another 20 seconds and with your paper towel, gently dab the wet vinegar spots blotting up the extra liquid. Within those little vinegar spots you should be able to see the black spray paint shining through.
If you want more of the black to come through rub off more of the mirror paint.
Start to finish, the jar probably took about 3 minutes not including the drying time of the black paint.
Use a nail and hammer or metal drill bit to add a hole to the pesto lid.
This was my first choice for a knob on top, a drawer pull that had been in my kitchen.
After deciding the brushed nickel knob was too tall for this jar, I opted for this squattier, less statuesque, white porcelain knob.
It may be a small can but I still have some of that Mirror Spray leftover. I hope it’s enough for another project. I do have one in mind.
I hope you get a chance to try this one. It’s a quick and easy craft project. Stay inspired.
