Updated Vintage Sewing Cabinet

I have another cute side table makeover for you today. I tend to gravitate toward the side tables because they are easy to carry, easy to transform and every home needs a bunch. Having said that, I think I still have three side tables waiting patiently in line for their makeovers.
This one comes courtesy of my neighbor Anne who decided to join a bunch of other neighbors and move to Florida. Something about snow, cold weather…blah blah blah. 🙂
Anyway, before she flew the coop she offered me this cute little sewing table. I actually thought it was just a small side table with a couple of drawers until I tried to get that bottom drawer open.
I was pulling and pulling on that second drawer and nothing was happening, so I turned the whole thing over to see what it could be stuck on and that’s when I see this round tray.
I was pulling on the handles but all I really needed to do was push firmly on one side and out pops this very dusty sewing drawer.
I’m pretty sure this part of the cabinet had not been used in quite some time.
Overall, the cabinet was in great shape, the top had just a little veneer damage (lower left corner) and a few faint water marks.
The bulk of the cabinet received a coat of black chalk paint with the top and the drawers left their natural wood finish. (That lower drawer is not broken, it’s just half swiveled.)
I’m changing from drawer pulls to drawer knobs so I had to fill in the holes I wasn’t using with wood putty.
Sand off any excess wood putty so that the holes are level with the rest of the drawer.
The wood putty didn’t take my stain too well but a quick dab of similar colored paint hides the holes really well.
The upper left hole has paint, upper right has no finish and the bottom two have the stain.
I think you can see a shadow of me taking a picture, kindly disregard that. 🙂 What I’m really showing you is the top with one coat of vintage wax on the top portion of the table. On the lower half, you can still see the water marks. Apply two coats of the wax buffing with fine steel wool when dry. Do the same with the drawers.
The sewing drawer came back to life with a coat of Restor-A-Finish . That stuff is so easy to use, just wipe on and the drawer looks brand new again.
The two missing spool pegs were easily replaced with a dowel and painted to match.
The entire table was finished with vintage wax which not only hides the water stains but almost covered all the fading around the old drawer pulls.
Add knobs and the table is complete.
He’s such a cute little table and he is loving his makeover.
Stay inspired.

Beautiful job!
This is beautiful!!!
Well done! I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now and always wait for a new post – you are very talented!
We’re you able to remove the swivel shelf for painting? I have the same table and I would like to remove that drawer to clean and paint it. Any suggestions?
I never removed the sewing drawer, just left it where it was. I did clean it with the restor-a-finish which turned out beautifully.
I have that exact same cabinet and will be restoring the finish. Do you know what manufacturer made it and when they were made?
