Barrel Stave Wine Rack

Last month we took a quick weekend trip to the beach with my sister and her husband. On one of the days, while the hubbys hit the golf course the wives headed for a flea market. The flea market was really terrible but since we were already out we managed to scout out a few other local yard sales and a architectural salvage/antique store.
Way back in the corner of the salvage yard were the remains of an old barrel…barrel staves. No rings, just the staves. Five of them came home with me but now I wish that I had gotten more.
I’m using two of them to make a wine rack. OK, just the back of the rack, the actual wine holder is a thrift store find. I’ll also be needing a couple short pieces of pallet wood.
These staves had been sitting outside quite a while and had collected lots of dirt and black aging. I sanded a lot of the aging off but left some of the rust from the hoops.
Center the wine rack on the boards. From the outside of the staves measure how long your pallet wood supports need to be…cut and sand.
Use a grinder or hack saw to cut the decorative piece off of the wine rack. I used the same grinder with a sandpaper attachment to smooth down the cut edge of the metal.
Spray paint if desired. This is a dark brown metallic finish from Rustoleum.
American Walnut stain gives the staves and the pallet wood a nice rich finish.
Screw on the pallet wood supports.
The wine rack is attached to the staves with Copper Tube Straps . My tube straps are a little too big for the wine rack but they still hold it securely especially when the wine is inserted. I guess I need to be on the lookout for 1/4″ straps.
I mixed up some paint, a little gray, a little brown, and a little black, so that the screws and the straps are all the same color.
A couple D-Ring Picture Hangers are more than enough to hold the 4 bottle wine rack. Each D-ring should support 40 pounds.
Look for another of my stave projects coming up in the next week or so.
Stay inspired.
Need space for more wine bottles? You may want to check out the rack made from railroad spikes.

that wine rack is GORGEOUS, utilizing part of the wine making process to create a simple, sleek rack for wine storage, i know this is probably one of your easiest projects, but maybe one of my favorite
I would never have thought of this in a million years! Great job!
Looks great! It could also be used to hold rolled up towels in a bathroom.
That’s a great idea. I wish I’d thought of it.
Fantastic!! Like it a lot!
