Christmas Tin and Wallpaper

This Christmas tin has been sitting in my donate pile for a couple years now. Every time I’ve gathered all my junk to make a donation I’ve put this tin aside. I know it has hidden potential.
It’s time for a makeover.
To the top of the tin I’m affixing a small piece of embossed wallpaper cut slightly smaller than the lid. I’ve used this wallpaper in a couple other projects but I still have lots left. I originally picked up the wallpaper at the salvage yard and you may remember seeing me use it on the crib bench and the backing of a TV stand but at the rate I’m going, I will never use it all up.
Attach the wallpaper square with lots of Mod Podge.
Cut thin pieces of wood trim to frame the wallpaper.
Adhere with E6000 Adhesive or Gorilla Glue…any type of adhesive with high sticking power.
Four little wooden pieces became my feet. Holes are predrilled and they are attached with screws from the inside.
Prime your box to get it ready for painting. I’m just using some leftover chalk paint.
The color I chose to paint my box seems to be my favorite lately though you’ll usually see it on much bigger surfaces (counter, mantel, cubby shelves). It’s a nice black/brown. Use lots of brown paint and add black sparingly and you’ve got your own version of black/brown.
When dry, smear a little Rub ‘n Buff Metallic Gold Leaf over the surface of the wallpaper and any other edges you’d like to highlight.
If you don’t want to buy the gold leaf, you can also use gold paint drybrushed over the surface.
Use clear wax to seal the paint.
When I was finished painting the box, I went back to my box of junk to pick out a knob. Didn’t expect it, but the one I liked the most was this old doorknob.
** Make sure your paint and wax dries completely or it can be scratched off.
Save those Christmas tins and stay inspired.

Do you think Goodwill will give me my tins back?
Your tin is fabulous!!
I’m sure if you ask nice 🙂
What a wonderful makeover! You have transformed a typical tin into a great “antique box” for mementos or stationery, greeting cards, etc. You did a fantastic job and your imagination may just inspire me! I would never have thought of painting embossed wallpaper nor using a picture frame on top. Love it!
This is a great makeover; The tin looks wonderful.
Could you use a picture frame for the top? There are often small ones at thrift stores and that might work. Now I’m off to look through my stash…!!!!
Absolutely. Whatever works!
