Easy Built in Cabinet – Part 2

I showed you the first part of my easy built in last week. It’s an easy built in because it takes advantage of already installed cabinets and a buffet that was just in the need of a little updating.
This was the before picture and you can find Part 1 here. The building is all done and now I’m back with the finishes.
This is where I left you. A new counter and shiplap backing has been installed and I’ve started to paint.
Remove all the drawers, doors and existing knobs and pulls.
One of the perks of chalk paint is that you don’t have to prep the wood and I for one am all for no prep…but that being said, this finish was pretty slick and I wanted to give the chalk paint the best chance of adhering so I took the palm sander to it.
If your drawer pulls are different than the current holes this would be the time to patch them up. I hadn’t picked out my pulls yet so I just went ahead and painted. I’ll get to my patching in a moment.
Paint with black chalk paint using 2 coats if necessary.
Take your sander back out and scuff up the edges.
Finish all surfaces with two coats of clear wax following the directions on the bottle for specific application directions.
Once everything is painted and waxed use finish nails to attach those side edge pieces.
Hopefully, when you tore out the moulding and quarter round you saved a big enough piece to finish the floor edges.
You can see why I needed the storage in this little nook…it holds all my antiques… the phone books, the paper maps and the telephone land line. 😀
Reattach any doors you took off and do any touch ups.
From Hobby Lobby I brought two possible drawer pulls home. I had taken the old handles to the store so I actually knew in advance that this one wouldn’t quite cover the old holes.
This is the small brown metal trunk handle and this is the pull I ended up using. They also have the handle in large if you’re interested but that one was too big for this project.
Make sure you wait for the 50% off sales…it’s worth the wait.
I also brought home this half moon metal pull. This one would have covered my existing holes but I loved the rust on the first one.
If I had decided on my pulls earlier this step would already be done.
Use plastic wood to fill any misaligned holes.
Sand well and reapply the plastic wood if necessary.
Repaint with the black chalk paint feathering it out so there is no noticeable paint edge and reapply the clear wax.
Generally, Hobby Lobby pulls do not come with their own screws. I just used normal silver screws to attach.
Paint those screws with brown paint mixed with a couple dabs of black paint. Pretty good match if I do say so myself.
These glass knobs were also from Hobby Lobby. They do come with their own mounting hardware.
If you have an outlet in the middle of your project, loosen the screws and pull it out so that it is level with the new wall.
Top is reloaded with recipe books. This was a great time to clean out all the books I no longer use, which is probably most of them.
So excited, the last of my laminate countertop has now been sent to the dump and look how much new storage I have.
Stay inspired.

Looks great – and so MUCH space in all those drawers for storage. Great patina.

Looks really good. Great use of that mediocre chest. Much more class now.
Joan, it’s like that china cabinet was meant for that space. Aside from all the extra storage, it looks like it was custom built for that alcove.
Brilliant!!
Very nice! Love how it turned out and the great storage you have for, ahem, your antiques. Lol. I have those too. ?
Even my recipe books are quickly turning into antiques.
Oh my word, that looks AMAZING! What a difference.
Joan, this is an amazing makeover to this space! You did a great job, as usual.
I love this, you did a great job! Have a similar plan in mind for our kitchen. Thanks for sharing this!
