Welcome Back, I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend. Today I have an easy build for you, another pallet wood frame, but stay with me until the end…or just skip to the end…because I have a wonderful announcement.
For this project you will need pallet wood and a plain store bought frame. I’m using the Ribba frame from IKEA. It’s not only the perfect frame width but also comes in at only $1.99. And since pallet wood is free and I already had the paint, builders adhesive and scrap wood backing, $1.99 was my total cost for this project.
Cut your pallet wood long enough so that you have a nice sized frame surrounding the store bought frame.
Sand the edges of the pallet wood, center the frame and mark the pallet wood where the frame will sit.
Cut out where you marked the frame.
Place your pallet wood on a thin piece of scrap wood that you will be using as your backing. Cut the backing not quite as wide as the pallet wood. You don’t want any sticking out the sides.
Mark an inside cut within the interior frame about 1/4″ smaller than the opening. This ledge is where you will sit the store bought frame. Cut with a jigsaw or scroll saw.
Use builders adhesive to attach the pallet wood to the backing.
Use more builders adhesive on the ledge to attach the Ribba frame.
This is the back of the frame. The opening for the Ribba frame is still totally accessible to add or remove photos.
Paint as desired. Here I’m using a light grey chalk paint as my base.
If you’re painting a checkerboard, measure and mark your squares or use a checkerboard stencil.
Paint your checkerboard pattern.
Sand the edges of the pallets one more time and surface if desired. Coat with clear wax.
And now for my big announcement. On Good Friday my middle son and his wife became the proud parents of Felix Patrick, making me a first time Grandma. I couldn’t be more proud.
The orange on the checkerboard frame goes perfectly with his new nursery and if the little guy ever decides to open his eyes, the photo can be easily switched out.
One more picture of the new happy family. I’m so happy for them.
Stay inspired.

Congrats! I got my first grand baby last January – life is so much fun with him!
Congratulations on becoming a first-time grandmother. It’s so much fun. The baby is beautiful and I love his name. I like the frame too (my favorite color- orange) but it still can’t compare to the baby! Enjoy!
Love your checkboard frame. That little angel looks sweet in there! Thanks for sharing how to make the frame and backing!
How wonderful to have a new grandson. He’s beautiful!
Whoa…lucky you Grandma! A new baby, you’re so lucky. And love the frame too.
