Chicken Nesting Box to Shabby Chic Shelving
I never knew it before but I think I have a thing for chickens. Over the past couple years I’ve transformed a chicken coop into a coffee table.
And a chicken incubator into another coffee table…
…and so it would be totally reasonable for me to want to transform this chicken nesting box. I’m just following the chicken life cycle.
I would love to take credit for being the first to use a chicken box as shelving, but I got my inspiration from watching HGTV’s Fixer Upper and when I saw Joanna Gaines’ box, I knew I had to have one . Stay with me, and you’ll see my inspiration pic.
There isn’t too much to do to make this chicken box to shelving transformation. There were only a few bottom boards still intact and those that were there still had remnants of chicken poo. They all had to go.
The bottoms just popped out, probably to make cleaning out the nests easier.
I used the wood from an old shelf as my new bottom boards cut to fit…
…notching out the corners where needed.
Some of the box was heavily rusted and those parts were sanded down. I liked the look of the rust, I just didn’t want any flaking off.
Bottom boards all got a fresh coat of paint.
I used a nail gun with finishing nails to tack the boards back in place. I’m assuming I won’t need to change any nests.
Final step was to give the pull down perches a coat of Varathane, dark walnut stain mixed with polyurethane.
Son #2 claimed the chicken nesting box for his house and he installed it last week.
The wall looks a little bare underneath the shelf but that should soon be filled up with a coffee bar. I’ll update pics when I get them.
This is the chicken nesting box from my good friend, Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper fame. OK, I’ve never met her, but she should be my best friend. Her chicken nester is in their playroom.
Here is another one of my best friend Joanna’s houses.
This chicken nester is from Kat at Maple Leaves and Sycamore trees. She shows her box off in a mudroom reveal.
Can’t find one at a flea market? This may be your lucky day, you can still buy a Poultry 10-Hole Nest like the one above with no chicken poo included over at Amazon.
Stay inspired.
