Mardi Gras Baby Shower

Last week I showed you the alligator veggie tray from my son and daughter-in-law’s Mardi Gras themed baby shower.  I have a few more projects from the party and even if you’re not planning a Mardi Gras party you may be able to modify some of these ideas for your next party or baby shower.Mardi Gras Party and Baby Shower

Paper lanterns really make a party.  My front hallway never looked so good.  You can find the paper lanterns at party stores or online.

My other daughter-in-law, Steph, who, by the way, did all the planning and gave out all the assignments,  made this chalkboard style sign and she did it freehand, no setting it up on the computer first….and the game was a lot of fun too.  Don’t say Baby game.  I don’t know if you can read the rules.

 1.  Grab a baby and keep it close

2. Don’t use the word “baby” and if you hear anyone use the word “baby” you get to take theirs.

3. The person with the most babies wins

More paper lanterns  decorated the family room.  The antique cradle in the corner was there to hold the baby gifts.

Past Scavenger Chic projects in this room:  Hand Cart coffee table,  Painted Brick Fireplace,   Faux Railroad Tie Mantel,  Red Jewelry Box,  Cheese Plate Pedestals, Tripod Floor Lamp,  Personalized Heirloom  Pillow and a  Typing table (holding the watering can behind the couch).

This was one of the Wedding Chalkboard Signs I had made for a wedding last June.  A fresh coat of black paint and it was ready to be repurposed.    For a complete tutorial on how to make chalkboard signs and a few font suggestions make sure you click on the link.

One of my assigned tasks was to recreate this tablecloth from the Magnolia Creative Co.   It’s made with a store bought table cloth and 12 yards of tie dyed fabric. I used a sewing machine but I’ll let Magnolia Creative co give the tutorial.

And since we still had our pots of tie dye for the tablecloth we decided to try our hand at cotton onesies.

The onesies were then used as part of the baby shower decor.

This is one of two Mardi Gras themed diaper bouquets Steph, made for the party. Makes a great centerpiece and a great gift.

My domed cheese plates were still sitting out from their makeover a couple weeks ago so they became part of the decoration.

The mom and pop to be love everything spicy, so why not a chocolate fountain converted to a hot sauce fountain.  Dippers were hot wings and breaded cheese sticks.  Also on the menu were, jambalaya,  gumbo,  bean salsa  and a mimosa bar.

Instead of a traditional Mardi Gras King Cake, Steph opted for brightly colored cupcakes decorated with babies.

In a normal King Cake finding  the baby in your cake symbolizes luck and prosperity to whoever finds it . In some traditions, the finder of the baby is designated “king” or “queen” for the evening. That person is also responsible for purchasing next year’s cake, or for throwing the next Mardi Gras party. We’ll be expecting lots of parties next year.

Wheel of Fortune DIY Spinner, Mardi Gras party

My last assignment was to make a wheel of fortune spinner so that the couple could reveal the name of the baby.

The main supplies needed are a 24″ wood round, a   Lazy Susan  spinner, acrylic paints plus black and white and a 24″ square backer board.

Use the wood round to mark where to cut on the backer board leaving one of the corners intact so that you have a place for the pointer.

Prime the wood round with white paint.

Cut out the bottom backer board.

Paint the edges black.

Center the lazy susan spinner and use screws to attach.

Before painting the top, lightly sand to get rid of any rough patches.

Paint as desired.

Instead of painting I used mardi gras mask clip art found online for my center decoration.

Mod podged the masks in place.  For my spokes I’m using cut up colored pencils.  You could also use nails, screws, dowels….

Pencils were glued in place.

For the pointer, I’m using this wooden piece with a small slit and some plastic strapping I found in the Home Depot parking lot after I bought my wood pieces. I’m such a scavenger.  🙂

Without the plastic strapping you could also use a plastic zip tie or piece of a plastic bottle.

Drilled a hole in the  backing and inserted the wood piece.

When people arrived they were given beads in one of three colors.  When it was time to play, the game teams were divided by the color of their beads.

The colors on the wheel coordinated with trivia questions. If the team answered the trivia question correctly they got to guess a letter for the baby name. We had both baby themed questions and color themed questions.

The mom and pop to be played Pat Sajak and Vanna White.  The guessing board is the back of the Welcome to Festival du Bebe sign with letters held on by thumb tacks.

I hope you found a couple ideas you could use for your next party.

Until next time, stay inspired.
