One more use for an old Barbell Weight

My youngest son is graduating from high school this week and I’m busy doing projects for my middle son’s wedding next month so I thought I’d share a super simple DIY with you.  I had a little hiccup with this project but it is still  fairly simple.

My plan was to clean out my purse.  All my receipts somehow find their way to the bottom of my purse. When I do have a chance to do some purse cleaning, I’ll throw away some receipts but the remainder, the ones you wonder whether you’ll need again, those receipts are left in a pile on the counter.

DIY Receipt Spike, Receipt Holder, upcycled weight

A receipt spike would solve my paper problems.

I found a weight at the thrift store, perfect amount of weight for my receipt holder.

The spike was from my kids old rocket launcher set.

The plan was to glue the launch rod to the inside of the weight.   Boom!  Done!

On the bottom of the weight, I added a piece of duct tape over top of the rocket launch rod so no glue would leak out.

On top, I filled the weight cavity with E 6000 clear glue adhesive.

I found, that a funnel turned upside down over top of the weight held the spike straight while it dried.

After a day of drying the glue seemed to be fairly set, so I set about painting my spike a nice bright red.

I have several things around the room painted red, so it would add to my pop of color.

Here’s where my hiccup occurred, after a couple of days, the glue didn’t seem to be as solid as I would have liked.  Turning the weight over, the glue had managed to completely disintegrate the yellow plastic disc at the bottom of the rocket launch rod.

I’m pretty sure that that was not in the plans.

Back to the drawing board. I always seem to need a Plan B.

On top of the weight I glued on a couple of washers and nuts.  On the bottom (where the hole was) I stuck in two more nuts which seemed to anchor down the receipt spike.

Sanded the weight just enough to highlight the lettering, and added a couple felt pads to the bottom.

The moment of truth…it actually works!

That’s not all the receipts I have laying around, but it’s a good start.

It would have been nice to have the spike last Christmas when I  misplaced a few receipts that I needed for returns.

Happy upcycling.  Stay inspired.
