Easy No Sew Padded Seat Cover

Several years ago, a friend of mine asked if I could help her with a cushion for a bench she had recently bought. She had already gotten the fabric and a 2 inch piece of foam and now she was attempting to cover the foam.
I think I guided her in the right direction but upholstery is really not my strong suit.
I mainly get my sewing machine out for Halloween costumes, mending and pillows. If I had to be her guide these days I would probably steer her away from the sewing machine and urge her to pick up a staple gun. Her week long project would only take an hour (more or less).
This bench had seen better days but nothing a little sanding and paint couldn’t cover up.
A couple coats of primer and a coat of semi-gloss white trim paint, I was now ready for my pad.
Use the top of your bench as a pattern to mark a piece of 1/2 inch plywood.
Cut out the plywood including rounding the corners if your bench has rounded corners.
Now you can use that same plywood to mark 2 pieces of 1″ foam. I’m doubling up 1″ foam instead of using 2″ foam because it’s less expensive and it’ll work just as well for this project.
The foam can be cut with ordinary household scissors.
On the top piece of foam, use scissors to make a beveled edge.
Cover the foam with a layer of quilt batting. This will soften any hard edges of the foam.
Since I’m using a striped fabric, I’ll want that stripe down the center of my cushion to be as straight as possible, I’ve marked the center of the plywood and the center of my fabric.
Starting in the center of each side. staple the fabric into place alternating sides and pulling the fabric tight as you go. Make sure you match the marked centers of the fabric and the plywood.
The new top can be screwed onto the bench from below.
I know you can do this one. All you need now is a bench.
Stay inspired.

Very nice! I might use a print fabric so I won’t have to worry so much about the finished pattern being straight! You’ve done and excellent job.
Thank you so much for sharing this at the Farmhouse Friday link party! Pinned and shared! 🙂
This post is so easy to follow! Thank you so much.
