Pallets and Junk Hearts

Earlier in the week I shared with you a trio of pallet wood and junk hearts and today I have another heart project for you with even more pallet wood and even more junk.
You would think that if you kept using the same supplies that all my projects would start looking the same. I think they all have their own personalities.
Gather your pallet wood together and start with the background. I’m making a set of three hearts. Each square measures about 12 inches, and is secured in the back with finishing nails and additional scrap wood.
I painted my pallet wood white with leftover trim paint then sanded the edges to get rid of any rough edges.
Cut a heart pattern out of paper. Trim until you get the perfect size for your background.
Place your heart pattern over top of more pallet wood, trace, and cut out with a jigsaw or scroll saw.
Make a smaller heart pattern for the middle heart. Trace onto pallet wood, and cut out.
I have a stack of old piano music that used to be my grandmothers so I decided to incorporate the music into my hearts. If you don’t have music you could consider old love letters, tissue paper, decorative scrap book paper, old book pages, newspaper…
Use the same heart pattern that you used for the larger hearts. Trace and cut.
Modpodge the sheet music onto your backing. Paint a layer of modpodge, attach the sheet music followed by another layer of modpodge.
For a splash of color, paint the small center heart red. Once dry, sand all the edges.
Seal all three hearts with a layer of clear wax. If you would like a darker finish, follow up the clear wax with a layer of vintage wax, painted on and rubbed off.
If you apply vintage wax directly to the pallet wood it gets really dark and hard to work with because of the roughness of the pallets.
Before I call my project finished, I dove into my box of junk and pulled out a few rusty tidbits to add a little junky pizzazz.
Make one, two or three, but if you need even more ideas you may be inspired by my pallet wood and junk hearts from the last couple of years.
Have a great weekend and stay inspired.

I ususally don’t like anything with hearts on it but I love these! I think because of all the different elements you used! My favorite ones are the one with the hinge and the one with the coat/towel holder thingy on it 🙂 I’m waiting for my inspiration to come, I seem to be in a big ol slump lately! You on the other hand always seem to be inspired and creating the best things!
Lovely ideas keep coming up on this site! I have quite a stack of pallet wood from which I sometimes produce carved painted fishes. Might try a few hearts having seen these images. I already make hearts carved from discarded old bricks (see my Facebook header for those, or my Chiselbrick website.
Am not into hearts either but you always seem to come up with the cleverest, most interesting things !! Best thing is they’re made from upcycled materials – nothing better !!! Love, love, love it !
Generally I’m not into hearts either (believe it or not), especially if they are overly sweet, but for some reason I enjoy putting pallets and junk together and see what comes together. I think it’s the same way with stars, they don’t necessarily have to be just for the 4th of July.
Joan, I love your idea! I am pinning it, because there are so many ways customize it! The heart with hinge is my favorite, though they all look great! Have a nice weekend! 🙂
I love anything made with pallet wood and junk. This is so cute and not just for Valentine’s Day.
Joan, you are the queen of rustic junk hearts! Just love all three of these. Pinning to share.
Another junk heart masterpiece, Joan! Love the mix of rusty hardware SO much!
