Recipe Box and Book Holder

In August I picked up about a dozen treasures from a nearby flea market that I wanted to makeover or transform. I’ve managed to complete a couple of the projects, but most of my finds are still on my todo list. The problem is, I keep getting distracted.
Trying to find a couple items to enhance my treasures, I’ve been frequenting the local thrift stores a bit more than usual.
You know it’s always hit or miss at a thrift store. It’s a rare occasion when you find exactly what you’re looking for.
Such was the case with this wooden recipe box…I’m looking for a stool and this is what I find. I do have a weakness for boxes and small cubby drawers.
It wasn’t until I picked it up that I realized that the top tilted up. What I thought was just a cute little box with drawers was now a recipe book/iPad holder. Heck with a stool, this box needed some loving.
The underside of the box was signed Adam Savage. The only Adam Savage I know was one of the cohosts from Mythbusters.
Did Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame make recipe book holders in his earlier days? Do I have an Adam Savage original?
I wanted to show you the back of the box just in case you wanted to make one for yourself. A wooden top hinged onto the top of a box and you have your own iPad holder.
I would have loved to have kept the original finish on the box but the wood was both greased stained and dried out.
So, on the same day that I’m painting the Thomasville side table with black chalk paint, I also tackle this little project with the same chalk paint and the same dirty brush.
While the Thomasville table was finished with a vintage wax, this box was finished with a white wax. If you would like to see the difference in waxes make sure you click on the link for the table.
The wax was painted on and the excess was rubbed off.
This is a fantastic holder for those good old fashioned cookbooks. You do remember what a cookbook is?
And the drawers are the perfect size for those recipe cards you got handed down from your Mama.
And of course, if you are all digital, the iPad works great as well.
Have a great week and keep your eyes peeled for whatever treasures may come your way.

Do you want to sell your recipe box?
Sorry, the recipe box is long gone. That post was from 2016. If I find another one I’ll keep you in mind.
