Chicken Coop Coffee Table diy

When I wanted a new coffee table for my living room, I didn’t turn to the furniture stores, I went directly to Pinterest. The talent, craftiness and ingenuity of the people out in blogland is incredible.
I eventually decided, that I was almost sure I was positive that I wanted a chicken coop (crate?) coffee table. I don’t live on a farm so the only experience I’ve had with chickens was staying in a motel one night right next to a farmyard. At 3AM we awoke to the sound of a rooster crowing right outside our door. Every 10 minutes until morning, that rooster let out a rip-roaring cockle-doodle-doo. Is it a myth that roosters are supposed to crow only at the crack of dawn? If that was my rooster, he would not have lasted until the end of the week.
With the chicken coop in mind I now had to find one. Ebay is super expensive for the crates and you have to pay shipping. I’ve found several at yard sales, but only after I had made my coffee table. Mine was eventually found for a reasonable rate on Craig’s list. It was in perfect shape, it was clean (not a trace of chicken poo) and it had a great finish. Sold!
The feet were originally Ball Top Finials meant to be used for deck posts. The screw is already attached. These were found at Home Depot. These were originally used for the feet of a set of shelves (painted red) but I’ve since moved the shelves and didn’t want the shelves quite so tall, so the feet came off. On top of the red, the feet were painted a nice gray, sanded off with a sander then stained.
To install the feet, predrill holes in the corners of the chicken coop. Just screw the feet right in.
I happened to have this metal tray that fit perfectly over top of my coop.
Finished off with a few pallet boards cut to fit inside the tray. If you don’t happen to have a tray, a piece of glass or the pallet wood used separately would work great.
Super easy project, the chicken coop makes the perfect size coffee table so all you have to do is a little tweaking to make it your own.
Do you remember the Moss Lantern? That diy can be found here.
If you need more ideas for that perfect diy unique coffee table check out my Pinterest board, Coffee Tables out of ? Right now it has 89 pins in it, so I know you’ll be inspired.
Have a great week and I’ll see you back here later in the week.

Awesome idea! I’m not sure I would be able to find a chicken coop like that in my area, but it sure is neat! I just took metal legs from a desk and transformed in into a table with pallet wood. Here is the link if you would like to take a look-

Very clever! I love all the elements tied together, especially the metal now lined with pallet wood tray!
Great coffee table won’t it be great to decorate inside come Christmastime I can just imagine a winter scene set up in it.
I haven’t put anything inside it yet. Love the idea for Christmas decorating.
Oh For REALS! That is too awesome. I’ve been wanting a rustic but unique coffee table. I haven’t figured out exactly what I want – but if this were to fall through the sky and land in my house I’d be over the moon!!!!
That looks awesome! How great that you had the perfect tray on hand too.
You did such an amazing job on this table, Joan! I love everything about it!

Joan,
I love your new chicken coop coffee table. That tray was awesome, but putting in the wood is the icing on the cake!
love it!

That tray was found half buried in the dirt on a hike we took last year. My husband and son were kind enough to carry it about a mile out of the woods for me. I always have my scavenging eye open, you just never know 🙂
The table is great and the feet are such a great touch. It looks beautiful with your furniture.
But that to tray!!!! How genius to put the wood slates in it! I am so doing that!
Thanks so much for sharing at Something to Talk About!

I love your chicken coop table! I’ve wanted one of those too. It’s really neat that you had the patience to find the coop but also that you put it all together. It looks great!
came from something to talk about, don’t know how i missed this i get your blog but anyway i love it a friend has one similar and i have always be envious xx
Wow!! A chicken coop coffee table. I have seen plenty of chicken coops…but never as a coffee table. This is just amazing. I am glad there wasn’t a trace of chicken poop in it. I have many memories of stepping in chicken poop as a kid. I could deal with the chicken poop…it was the dog poop I couldn’t deal with. My mom would make us wash our shoes outside when we did. Now, I would just throw them away.
I never would’ve thought to make a chicken coop into a home decor piece! Thanks for linking up to The Handmade Hangout! I’ll be featuring this on my blog today when the new linky goes live at 6pm ET. Hope to see you there to share what you’ve been working on this week!
Thanks Valerie, just got back from joining the party again. Thanks for the feature and the party.

First off, I was impressed you were able to find a sturdy chicken coop. Then you added the metal tray and added the wood –how perfect. Great job. I saw your link at the Painted Drawer link party.
Your ingenuity amazes me! I look so forward to seeing what you will be sharing with us at Friday Favorites! Thank you so much for being a party of our party. Have a great week. Michelle
I have had the chicken coop for a long time. Bought the legs at Home Depot as you suggested. Ready to put it together. Thanks so much for the idea. It will look great in my French Country room.
I happen to love french country chicken coops. Good luck on your project.

I have the chicken coop, using industrial wheels and I am going to use glass to top it off! Now just finding the time to put it all together! So glad your pin showed up today – maybe I will get it started after the holiday! Again thanks so much for the pin!
