It’s starting to feel like Christmas around here. The leaves are almost off the trees, the stores are decked out with lights and ornaments, and it’s freezing cold! Time to get started on a Christmas project.
Since I have a couple of fresh pallets waiting for me under the deck, I couldn’t resist yet another pallet wood project.
If you use pallet wood a lot like I do, you should have a lot of scrap shorter pieces. This is a great time to use some of those up. The longest piece on the actual tree measures only 13 1/2″‘.
So gather up your wood supplies. This tree used about 5 of the longer pallet pieces (5 of the wider thickness, and one narrower, about 37″ long), a strip of wood for cross bracing (could have also used pallet wood here, but I had bought this for another project and never used it) and 13 pieces of scrap pallet wood, again, no longer than about 13″.
Cut 3 pieces of your cross brace for the back, slightly shorter than the width of the back, and nail into place. Make sure you nail a couple of nails into each board. Great time to use a nail gun if you have one.
Time to start cutting the tree. One end of each of the tree pieces were cut with a miter saw set at 30 degrees, the other end is a straight cut. The longest scraps were used near the bottom and the shorter ones at the top of the tree.
Before nailing, I wanted a little more contrast, so I removed the tree and quickly white washed the backing with a mixture of paint and water.
Now my tree was nailed into place. If you’d like a pallet wood tree as wall decor to use year round, you’re done. Since mine was for Christmas, I wanted a bit more bling.
So many ways to decorate, big balls, little balls, outlined in lights or as a family tree of sorts.
Finally decided on vintage grayish/green balls.
The balls were attached with just a simple finishing nail angled upwards to hold the ornaments. These can easily be swapped out or removed for storage at the end of the season.
Just when I thought I was done, I thought it needed a star on top. A rusty star that usually makes its home in my bedroom was placed at the top of the tree.
And I was featured at:

What a fun tree! I like the herringbone pattern your pallet “branches” made.
You definitely gave new life and purpose to an old pallet. Totally love it and you have inspired me to make one for myself. Thanks for the inspiration. I love using pallet wood to create projects too. Keep up the good work.
I’m so happy I was able to inspire you. This project comes together quickly. Enjoy.
I love your pallet tree. Great easy project.

I just love this!!! Sadly, we’re running low on material.
That is really sad. I know how valuable they are…I just traded 2 of my pallets to my son who promised to fix my computer. Good luck!
Joan, this is way too cute! I love the variety of ways you’ve decorated it, too, the options are endless! Great idea, thanks for linking up with us at Best of the Nest!
This is without a doubt my favorite wood tree so far! I love it. And maybe that’s also because we have many pallets and a pile of lath. This is so clever. Thanks for posting it. I’m pinning.
