Pendant Light from the Flea Market

Back in May I showed you a really cool industrial beater from an abandoned restaurant. In a matter of seconds, with a light cord from IKEA, I was able to transform it into a super cool, super unique pendant light.
So when I saw the metal dome at a yard sale over the summer, I’m thinking super easy, super cool light fixture.
I know you’ve seen this picture before as I finish each of the projects, but the dome was my first flea market find of the day and the least expensive. It was probably a light fixture in it’s previous life but somewhere along the line it lost it’s wiring.
“How much?”, “$1.00.”, “Sold!”
Considering how easy the project was in the past, you would think that I would have made this my first project. Well I thought so too, but it took me until last week to make a return trip to IKEA.
They didn’t have the same light fixture that I had used last time, instead they had this product, SEKOND. It was just slightly more expensive, but that cord is covered in beautiful red cloth! And, if you don’t like the red, they also had it in white and a black and white combo.
The fixture comes with hooks to attach it to a ceiling. What it doesn’t come with is an on/off switch, so you either have to unplug when not in use, attach it to a plug that works with an on/off switch or change the cord to hard wiring.
My metal dome was not perfect for the light fixture…it’s hole was too large for the fixture and there were a couple more cutouts that I wish weren’t there.
Using the cord set as a template I cut out a hole in the round wooden piece shown above and with builders adhesive I attached it to the dome.
The wood got a coat of black paint.
To cover all my cutouts I wrapped rope around the dome and attached with more builders adhesive. Let dry.
All the holes were covered on the outside of the light but the inside still had the holes.
On the inside, I first tried to cut a soda can with a circle punch and attach those to the inside of the light but the slight bend from the can kept making them pop up. I really liked the way they looked like fish scales, so maybe I’ll use them in another project.
What I did end up using was just plain black paper circles attached with modpodge. The circles were then sealed with another layer of the modpodge.
The light fixture is the easiest part of the project, it just screws on.
The light fixture makes project Number 6 from the flea market. If you like, you cab check out my other flea market flips here…Hand Truck Coffee Table, Apple Picking Bucket , Feed Sack Ottoman, Barrel Hoop Mirror, and Thingamajigs.
I’m not finished with my finds yet, though it seems that lately I’ve been happily distracted by a pile of shutters.
Have a wonderful weekend. Stay inspired.
