Pallet Wood Wine Rack DIY

My son Kevin, and his then fiancee, Mollie, showed up on my doorstep one day wanting to do a project. They had been living in a apartment for over a year, and were anxious to make the place their own . Unfortunately they had very little balcony space (about a foot wide) and no real interior space to get out the electric saws or drills.
So, with no forewarning , I was a little at a loss for what that project would be. The only thing I had sitting around the house was this lonely pallet. It was a little small as far as pallets go and instead of having notched sides like a true pallet would, it had 2×4’s for sides. If they thought they could work with it, the pallet was theirs.
I don’t know how the conversation went. Maybe it went like this…
I like wine.
So do I.
Maybe we should make something to hold our wine.
Well that’s just an insanely, fantastical, incredible idea.
I love you, you’re the best.
Like I said, I don’t know how the conversation went, I’m just imagining. Anyway, the wine rack idea was born.
Most of the wood on the front was evenly spaced, but the wood on the back had to be realigned to match up with the front. They moved the wood slightly below the height of the front so that the wine would have less of a chance of falling forward.
With a can, they marked where the wine bottle notches would be, then cut them out with a jigsaw. Cuts had to be made on the front and back side of the rack.
Used one of dad’s wine bottles to do a test run. With that test run, they decided it might need a little more depth so they added an extra block of wood to the back. Sorry I don’t have a picture , but you can see a little of the addition below.
With rags, Kevin and Mollie stained the wine rack with a walnut stain.
For a backing, I gave them choice of pallet wood (of course), leftover bead board, or fabric. They chose this green striped fabric. It was stretched across the back and attached with staples. A french cleat was attached to the back for hanging. You can find one at Home Depot here. Supposedly it can support 200 lbs. I don’t think they will ever have that many full bottles sitting around the house, but it’s probably better to be safe than sorry.
All finished. I think it turned out fantastic. And from what I hear, it actually works… but for some reason they can’t seem to keep the rack full. 🙂

First, cute couple! Second, ingenious mom. Third, great transformation of a pallet into a wine rack. Clever, clever! Thanks for sharing it on Make It Monday.
Thanks for stopping by and for the compliment. Would love to take credit for this project but it really was all their idea. The biggest problem with their wine rack is keeping it stocked.

I’m so excited you chose me and I’m just picking out which project I should link up now. Thanks for hosting a great party.
