Stars and Stripes diy

Pallet Wood Stars and Stripes for the 4th of July diy, Pallet Wood

It’s hard to believe it’s the middle of May already and with the patriotic season fast approaching, I thought  I’d bring you my own version of the stars and stripes.

Memorial Day is May 25th this year, that’s only 2 weeks away.  And it’s way past time for me to take down my Valentine Heart and replace it with something a bit more seasonal.

I really love the flags made out of pallet wood, and I think a pallet is the perfect starting point for a flag, but I wanted something a bit different.

To make this star I’m going to refer you back to the  reclaimed wood stars I shared with you in February. In that post I told you how you could make your own, Pottery Barn inspired, wood stars out of reclaimed hardwood flooring.

For this project you’ll need to follow the same steps as the hardwood flooring stars, but this time you’re going to use pallet wood.

This is still a picture of the hardwood flooring stars, but you get the idea.

For this star I started out with 10, 13 inch lengths of pallet wood mitered at the ends. The thirteen inch lengths of wood will give you a star 33 inches wide.

You’ll also need a few more pieces of any width pallet wood.  Scraps would be great…painted red and white.

I actually painted way more wood than I needed.  My first plan was to use the red and white stripes as a background (as shown)  for the star. I changed my mind and decided to back only the star.

To get the exact amount of wood needed, so you don’t have a bunch of red and white pallet wood sitting around, you could make your cuts before painting.

Sanded the edges of the painted pallet wood and finished with a tinted wax, brushed on and rubbed off with a rag.

Alternating colors, the pallet pieces were marked and cut.

Pieces were nailed into place with finishing nails.

If all went well,  when I turn my star over it will have red and white stripes.
