Easy DIY Shutter Valance

Easy DIY Shutter Valance

Welcome back.  When I shared my shutter and slats coffee table with you a couple weeks ago I mentioned that I was now the proud owner of a bunch of mismatched shutters and to be prepared for more shutter projects coming your way.

Well, this past week I’ve been busy working on an upcycled shutter project.  It’s really cool, it’s coming along really nicely, I think you’ll like it… but this project is not it.

My new shutter project is still being painted so you’ll just have to come back and see that one.

Since I had shutters on the brain I thought I would share this quick and easy project.  This shutter valance upcycle has probably been in my kitchen for at least 10 years.  Long enough that it’s been repainted and long enough that  I don’t think it was called upcycling then.

It replaced this ‘poofy’ valance that my mom had sewed for me; eventually grease, dirt and the passage of time made me realize that it was time for a new one.diy-shutter-valance

I have wonderfully huge kitchen windows, so for my valance I needed 3 shutters… two full shutters trimmed at the end to fit the 2 large windows, and one shutter cut in half for 2 side windows.

These shutters are 15″ in width.

The shutters are attached to the window frame with screw eyes and cup hooks (3 on the full shutter and 2 on the half shutter).

When I first purchased the shutters they were a dark green.  They were painted brown for a while and now sport a glamorous semi gloss red.  When I painted the red, I let a little of the brown color show through for that ‘years of layered paint’ look.

If you don’t have any shutters, you may want to consider one of these 2 valances I shared from my son’s bedroom redo back in February. They are also super easy and fun to make.

Have a wonderful weekend. Stay inspired.
