Upcycled Beadboard Frame and a New Baby

Upcycled Beadboard DIY Frame

I’m working on another frame today as I welcome grandbaby number 2 to the family.  On January 30th, my oldest son, Keith and his wife Steph welcomed their first baby, a girl,  into the world.

This little one is a true miracle.  The blessed couple had a baby just over a year ago but due to a rare blood disorder the little guy did not make it. Nothing in life is sadder than giving birth and not having that little bundle to take home, not having that happy ever after.  This little one would have suffered the same fate if it were not for the miracle of modern medicine.

She’s even more of a miracle, she’s a girl.   😀   My husband is one of 4 boys, I had 3 boys, my other son had a boy…so we all are thrilled to welcome our first baby girl.  I need to do some shopping!

She is oozing cuteness, but now onto today’s project, the frame.  You’ll need beadboard ( I ripped this stuff off my bedroom wall years ago) scrap wood, glass and a matt.  Hopefully you bought a cheap frame that came with the glass and the matt.

Start working  from the center of your frame out. Cut a piece of thin wood, I’m using 1/4 inch plywood leaving an equal border around the central frame.

Sand the edges.

Do the same with the beadboard, leaving  a nice border around the plywood.  Sand all the newly cut edges.

Nail 1 inch thick trim to the back.  This will not only hold the beadboard together, which at this point is only being held together by paint, but will give the frame some thickness.

Paint the beadboard your desired color.  This is black chalk paint.009

This is the new dad painting the babies room.

He used two different colors, the pale celery green, second from the top, and the darker blue foreground.  Starting at the top, working freehand and leaving the sky white, he kept adding more and more pigment  until the darkest layer ( the mountains closest to you) had none of the  original celery green and consisted of just the dark blue.

So with that wall in mind, I needed a frame that was pretty neutral.   I settled on black but if it doesn’t work it can always be changed.DIY beadboard and scrapwood frame-005

Sand off the edges of the black paint.

This is the 1/4 inch plywood level first painted a sand color followed by a crisscrossed dry brush white layer.  If you want to see the paint closer, this is the same technique I used on the candlestick lamps from a few weeks ago.

Use wood glue or construction adhesive to attach the plywood to the bead board.

It’s subtle, but the frame is stamped with the babies name and birth date using TEKTON 5/32-Inch Letter and Number Stamp Set.

The picture, glass and matt are held together with 3/4″ upholstery tacks, leftover from my maple mirror makeover.

Predrill the holes using a slightly smaller drillbit than the tack so you don’t have to pound on the glass to insert it.  The tack is inserted just under the corner so that the glass doesn’t slide.

If you would like to see my last baby frame, you can find it here.  It also shows a sleeping baby!

I’m ready for babysitting duties. Have a great week, stay inspired.
