Time to Resort to Plan B

A couple of months ago, hubby and I spent a week vacationing in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands.

While we could have ventured out for dinner, being all inclusive, we ate most of our meals right at our resort, and there we found these hanging tealights. My picture doesn’t do it justice, but they were beautiful lit up at night surrounding us with candle light.  I was inspired.

I could make that. Their’s didn’t even have any large sticks, just a bunch of small ones all stuck on the column with a bunch of zip ties.  I have tons of sticks and vines.

All I needed to do was find a tree laden with vines and start chopping.

Supplies are ready.  A set of 6,  4 inch Hanging Glass Globe Plant Terrariums  from Amazon.  I chose this set because they advertised that they could hold tea lights.  A bunch of vines from the woods and 2 bags of 36″ zip ties from Walmart  (I have fat posts).

I have two posts I thought would nicely frame my seating area.  So here I am putting up vines. I’m using the zip ties, I’m placing my vines and I’m not liking it at all.  Hating it would not be too strong a word here.

What looked really beautiful framing our dining area on vacation now looked like deck clutter.

I couldn’t see how adding more vines would get me to like it any better.

I needed a Plan B.  Something I could still use those little glass balls on.

Back to the woods, this time in search of thinner vines to make a wreath.  As soon as I got in the woods I spy a possum. He was walking along a tree trunk but as soon as he saw me he stopped in mid stride and froze.  It wasn’t until I started chopping vines did he realize I wasn’t interested in him and he continued on his way.

So now I’m chopping away and I look down and it appears I’m surrounded by poison ivy.  I’m pretty sure I’m not allergic, but I did scrub up when I got back home just to be sure.  No pictures of the possum or the poison ivy, my hands were full of my pruner and vines.

It’s actually fairly easy to create your own vine wreath…create a circle  with the longest vine you can find. Tuck in any ends within your previous loop. Keep adding more and more vines, tucking as you go, until you like the way it looks or you’re tired of dodging poison ivy…whatever comes first.

I could have hung the wreath with wire or chains but I’m using the zip ties I had purchased for my original idea.  You should know by now that I hate having things go to waste.

The globes came with strings which I’m tying directly to the wreath in varying heights.  I could have tied the glass balls directly to the wreath but I want the option of taking them down in windy weather.

Out came some old wire Christmas tree ornament hangars which I twisted around the balls but I can still take them down as needed.

In the summer months my arbor is covered with a rust colored tarp for added shade.  I took it off for the pictures because it turned all my pictures orange.

You could also use these as small terrariums or hang the tea lights in a tree.  I’ll probably end up switching the votives out for the battery operated kind just because they last longer.

Until next time, stay inspired.
